Marking all posts read

I'm becoming more impressed with the setup of the forums here, now that the "jump to first unread post" is working.

What I'm wondering now, is if we can have a global "Mark all posts read" function.  At present, each sub-forum allows for all of the unread posts in that sub-forum to be marked as read, but there is no way (that I have seen yet, at any rate) to allow all sub-forums to be marked as read.

If we could do this on the first page of the forums, then it would be easy to:

  1. Come to the main page of the forums
  2. Filter by "Unread"
  3. Read the unread posts I'm interested in
  4. Mark all remaining unread posts as read, so they won't show up as unread next time I visit

That's feature suggestion #1.

Feature suggestion #2 would be to allow me to set certain sub-forums not to be displayed when using the standard filter options on the main page.  For example, I have no interest in ever reading any posts in the Mac or Español sub-forums.  So it would be convenient for me to be able to uncheck them somehow from the filter function, so that they will never show up when I filter by "Unread".

Thanks for listening.

As Andrew suggests, both of these functions are critical if you want to replace the newsgroup with the forums.

I just posted this same comment, but yours is much more clearly stated.

Same here! But I find it jumps to "last unread post" and sometimes have to scroll up to find the "first" (by date).

At present, each sub-forum allows for all of the unread posts in that sub-forum to be marked as read, but there is no way (that I have seen yet, at any rate) to allow all sub-forums to be marked as read.

Thanks for making me aware of that sub-forum feature as it provides a workaround to our common problem:

       1. Go to each sub-forum I'm not interested in and click "Mark all as Read"; and then
       2. Use the Unread filter on the Home page

To use the Unread filter more effectively it should display the sub-forum for each Topic. After reading topics of interest I would then like to "Mark all as Read".
I hesitate to set certain sub-forums as "not to be displayed" unless it is clear that such a filter  has been applied and it can readily be reversed.

Ordinarily, forum software that allows this would let you highlight the sub-forums you didn't want displayed in a "User Options" page.  You could then see which you were filtering out and/or make changes if and when desired.

So is there a way to actually mark all posts read?

Only in each sub-forum, not all sub-forums at once.

I know it has been awhile since this was mentioned, but having this functionality is even more critical now with sub-forums in the Logos 4 forum.

I use a forum environment for many other communities and while a forum environment can be a good thing the current environment and set of available tools in the Logos forums is costing me time. The unread feature on the front page is absolutely worthless. I have to visit all forums and now sub-forums whether I am interested in them or not in order to mark the messages in that forum as read.

Please, now that the coding pressure for Logos 4 is partially complete, can we get some attention spent on the forums?
