How good a deal is the HALOT?

I have Logos 5 Platinum, don't know Hebrew, but will be taking a course in Hebrew soon.  Are sale prices like this for the HALOT common or should I grab it now?

Thanks.

Ronald, like you I didn't have HALOT as part of my base package. This is the cheapest I've seen it for a long time - and I have academic discount too! I bought it in the sale as I didn't want to miss out on it!

I think that I would go for it while the Black Friday prices are still valid. If you are going to study Hebrew I can pretty confidently say that you will need it.

There is a bundle including both BDAG and HALOT for $274.95.  With HALOT at $119.95 on the BF sale that means that BDAG would need to be less than $155 for you to be sure to get a better deal than by buying the bundle.  The price of BDAG by itself is $150 so you can be sure to come out ahead by purchasing HALOT on the BF sale (If only by $5).

I've checked out every sale for the past three years, phoned Sales to ask for a discount on it and never got anywhere, so no, prices and offers like this on HALOT are not common.  I grabbed it while it's on sale, and suggest you do likewise (or go for the BDAG/HALOT bundle that George mentioned above.  They are both standard works for any kind of original-language work (I already had BDAG).

If you have Academic discount, I would recommend upgrading to Portfolio instead. (I've given much thoughts & calculation about this, more than I should)

Portfolio includes much more PLUS price-per-book ratio are much much cheaper... (it makes HALOT cost $1)

it shouldn't cost that much if you have academic discount & HALOT is included.

My advice: dont buy books that are included in a base package, rather, just upgrade to that base package. (*if you have academic discount)

    MESSAGE TO DAVID PAUL

This is your chance to quit using that totally inadequate Strong's and get a REAL Hebrew lexicon.  DO IT NOW !

George's advice to David seems very 'prophetic'.

I already have the BDAG - it is included in my Platinum base package.

As much as I would love to upgrade to Portfolio that includes the HALOT and numerous additional resources I want, I just cannot afford it.

Thanks for all the replies - I just purchased the HALOT.

How does it compare to A Concise Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament by William L. Holladay? I have that as part of a package. The summary on it makes it sound sufficient.

There's some discussion about the differences in this thread:

Here's another comparison between the two.  As you can see, HALOT is a wee bit more thorough! [:)]
