Au Revoir 4

After nothing but sheer frustration and wasted time with indexing failures and having tried everything that has been suggested, I am abandoning Logos 4 for the time being. When it ceases to be a Beta in disguise I may return. I'll give it a good year, then I might even be able to install it on my iMac as well as my PC.

I understand that it was a complete break from what had gone before, but I never had any problems previously. Older versions never caused me any problem. Logos 1.6 was a revelation in 1993/4; Logos 2 began to open up the notion of real interactive Bible study; Logos 3 was a step change and I achieved things in Bible study and academic work I could not have imagined. With none of these did I encounter the slightest problem with the programs. Logos 4 sucks. It's unstable, arcane and the searches are too large. Having a squillion results only swamps me. I sure hope I can turn off indexing when I come back! Broken Heart

I'm sorry you've given up. Indexing will not be switch offable in future versions, as Logos 4 depends on it (as indeed did Logos 2 if you remember). I appreciate the fact that you didn't give up, before trying several troubleshooting methods, but as I mentioned in the other thread, I think an uninstall/reinstall would probably have fixed the problem.

Logos 4 might be many things. It can be a little unstable, but it is certainly not arcane. And as for searches being too large, you are in complete control over which portion of your library is searched (even more so than you are in v3).

Sorry to hear of your bad experience, but as others have said, mine is the exact opposite. 3 perfect installs, on 3 pretty different computers, a little patience with the indexing, and wow - a program that has revolutionized my study and my sermon prep. I have done this series in Psalms since I have it, and have so much fun preparing sermons and discovering resources that I have had for years but didn't know I even had, or their value. For me, it does not suck, it is very stable (it has yet to crash), and well,... you get the idea.

I've even become a fairly regular contributer in the forum.

Hopefully when you come back, you'll have a much better experience, and you can be as excited about it as I am, or maybe you'll give the total uninstall / reinstall one last chance.

I am feeling the same frustrations on my Windows Vista (2GB, Dual Core Intel, 32 bit) machine. Updates want to re-index everything and it never seems to stop. I have just about given up on L4 on this machine, but will continue to use L3 on this machine. I am not giving up on it, but something is not working right.

However, and here is the kicker, I also have L4 installed on a netbook with Windows 7 Starter Edition (2 GB, 32 bit, Intel Atom CPU) and it works wonderfully. The update to L4a went without a hitch. Strangely, I had intended the netbook to just serve as a machine on which to read books (as far as LOGOS is concerned; it will serve a couple of other specialize purposes as well). Now that I have L4a on a stable machine,

If you hibernate your machine rather than turn it off (while indexing), it will continue indexing from where you left off rather than restarting from beginning, and hopefully you will see the light at end of tunnel

Alan, it sounds like you've been on Logos about the same amount of time that I have, and from reading a bit on what you're going through I think you would do well to try and pump-up your memory, if your system lets you. I have a Dell 8400 Pentium 4 CPU 3.0 GHz that I upgraded form 1 GB to now 3 GBs (that's the max I can put in), and it made all the difference in the world. Also, left the computer up during the night to allow the indexing to take place without any interruptions.

While the system doesn't fly like some of the folks with the E7s, or other quads, it gets me to where I need to go for the time being. Don't give up!!! There are folks who can help you sort it out!

It will have to wait - in the midst of all my grief, the left mouse button on this laptop went belly-up, literally. The button is no longer connected the mouse pad. I sent it off earlier today to the warranty repair facility. Of course, Part of the reason I was willing to let it go was because of the problems with L4.

I still am using L4a on my netbook - and am quite happy with it.

Will let you know what is up when it is returned.

Yeah, I bought Logos 4 thinking I was getting what I saw in the intro video, only to find out that I didn't even have a working home page. I uninstalled it and am gonna wait myself until it gets out of the alpha testing.

I assume you are speaking of the Mac version. There is a special forum of Logos 4 Mac if you have a question of want help on something. If you just wanted to vent your frustration, then you can do that also. Did you know that your purchase provided you with licenses for both Mac and Windows? If you do not wish to participate in the Alpha testing phase of the Mac version, you still have some options. 1) You can use version 1.2.2 on the Mac. 2) If you have access to Windows through a VM or even a Windows Computer, you can run the Windows version of L4.

The systems will be practically indistinguishable after a few months of development. That is a paraphrase of a post by Bob Pritchett, CEO of Logos.
