Bernard of Clairvaux begins a sermon with a quotation:
“The voice of gladness hath resounded in our land, the voice of exultation and salvation in the tents of sinners. A good word has been heard, a consoling word, a speech full of joyfulness, a rumour worthy of all acceptance. Sing praise, O ye mountains, and all ye trees of the woods. Clap your hands before the face of the Lord, because He cometh. Hear, O ye heavens, and give ear, O earth! Be amazed, and let every creature give praise; but thou beyond others, O man I”
J. C. Hedley, “Introduction,” in Sermons of St. Bernard on Advent & Christmas: Including the Famous Treatise on the Incarnation Called “Missus Est” (London; Manchester; Glasgow; New York; Cincinnati; Chicago: R. & T. Washbourne; Benziger Bros., 1909), 75.
Can anyone identify the source? Note the last character of the quote is a typo ... perhaps for a footnote or a !

I think it's a combination of a smattering of quotations from several places:
"tents of sinners" (Ps 83:11)
"and all ye trees of the woods. Clap your hands" (Isa 55:2)
"Hear, O ye heavens, and give ear, O earth!" (Isa 1:2)
"let every creature...praise" (Ps 145:21)
"Be amazed at this, O heavens" (Jer 2:12, NET)
and so on

That's a distinct possibility ... but I suspect that they were already combined into some sort of hymn or liturgical text before Bernard made use of them

Couldn't find any significant section of it in Google Books, but then again this is an English translation of Bernard's original. The way to search it would be to find his original text (in Greek?) and search Google Books for that. Still, there's the distinct possibility that it's a quotation from something that has never yet been digitized.

thanks for this find!
The syntax you used (double sqare brackets) will work in PBs and the wiki/topics sites, but the forum software should react to the most simple logosres:bernardxmas;ref=Page.p_75 - at least it did in the past and that's how it should work (it works if inserted into the browser URL field and this is what is generated if one uses the logos resource menu option "copy as URL for the web")

EDIT: seems the forum software is broken in recognizing it (I know for sure it used to work!). I try a workaround and manually insert logosres:bernardxmas;ref=Page.p_75 into a chain link. EDIT 2: this does it.
