SUGG: notes template
Mark Barnes has spurred me on with his ideas, especially with notes and clippings use, especially with their organization within the favorites section:
For those who haven't watched the videos yet (you should!--and many others, besides, by logos users, by logos itself--I really liked the clippings one--etc.), here is a short description of what he did to bring you up to speed:
- Within "favorites" he makes a folder for the bible book he is studying, and then makes sub-folders for each pericope within that Bible book. For Example:
- Luke (folder)
- Luke 2:41-52 (sub folder)
- Luke (folder)
Then, he will add notes and clippings in that pericope's folder like this:

- Notes: Luke 2:41-52 Initial Thoughts
- Notes: Luke 2:41-52 Context Questions
- Clippings: "Wisdom"

I hope you see the flow and the ability to organize all your research within favorites utilizing notes/clippings/ etc in a way that maximizes those tools.
That got me to thinking about my own exegetical-study-to-sermon process. I have distinct phases I go through:
- Initial Reading (thoughts, translation comparison, etc)
- Grammar/Word Study
- Commentary input
- etc.
In each phase, I use different tools (with some overlap, such as notes, Bible, etc), which is why I am now making my own layout for each section. And for each phase, I will also create different notes (L3 used to call them notefiles, but I don't notice that word anymore . . . )
BUT, I also noted that for each phase of study, say, "reading", I have several distinct questions i ask or "categories of thinking" I pursue:
- General/Random thoughts
- Scriptural Context observations and questions
- Cultural Context observations and questions
- Translation comparison/differences, etc
and so on.
Here is my suggestion: I think it would be helpful to create note templates. These note templates would load with my predefined questions and categories without having to retype them again and again and again. Of course I could also add new notes (or subnotes) if I needed the flexibility for that particular study. The template would also have the correct note color.
I don't know how much work it would be for Logos to do this, but if anyone uses notes, and their study notes fit within a regularly used system, having templates (made by the user) would greatly speed up Bible study. And that is one of the goals of Logos, correct?

This is something I strongly support/push. In the meantime, I have a note file titled "templates" and do a cut and paste. I was very excited at the study templates in the beta 3 before Logos 4 came out. ... I'm still waiting for a more firm response as to when Logos will get back to us on a time table for implementation in L4. Perhaps, when we get the ability to share files again, we can all join together and present Logos with a representative collection of the templates we use.

Yup, that's how I coped with L3 ... and I've carried it over into L4. My biggest complaint for L4 however, is the inability to collapse the notes ... which combined with not being able to scroll with the cursor down/up button past a note boundary adds some pains to my neck that I didn't have in L3

I defintely do not like the notes function in its present form- very clumsy in use and not very user friendly, jumps a lot, not very steady in operation.

Whyndell, not sure what you mean by it "jumps" a lot, unless you are referring to how it seems to "lag" behind a bit when one types, right now. Notes did have some buggy behavior when the "open text box" would "deselect" while one was typing and you would have to reselect it . . . and sometimes typed words would delete. I haven't noticed that lately.
There are several things either can not, or don't know how to do (print notes easily, etc). But I do like how they look, and I think manipulating the font size/style, etc has been made a ton easier. And, I gotta tell ya, NAMING the notefile and note is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much easier now! I could not stand the way it was in L3.

you know, I can't figure out how you do this. I can figure out how to select and copy/cut a whole notefile (if they are still called that) and paste it into a new one. That is a mystery . . .

George, thank you for your reply. However when trying your suggestion, I see this only selects/copies a singular note within the larger note file. I may not have stated it correctly, but I would like a notefile template (actually several templates), each containing several potential notes--and actually not "notes" themselves, but the titular heading. In other words, a notefile "form" into which can be inserted various notes. The application for me is that ever week I have a certain regimen I use in my exegetical process. I would like notefiles that reflect the larger movements of that regimen (initial reading/thoughts, context/back ground, grammar, word study, etc., and each of those having already titled notes within them, eg, under context/background have a note titled "scripture context" (and you could make that into several notes, too: immediate, Pauline, NT, OT etc), cultural context, etc. Having a template keeps one from having to keep retyping each notefile and it's particular note headings (or titles?).
OFFTOPIC: I see notefiles seem to be referred to by Logos as notes now? If so, what differentiates a Note from a note within that note?

My apologies. I did misunderstand you. I use templates for the Notes within the file not for the entire file. What you want is more similar to adding our own resources - promised but still an unknown

I don't know the precise technology but Logos 4 is based on a database rather than a collection of independent files ... hence the term "note file " is obsolete - document or dataset is probably the correct new term.
