What was your best Logos purchase in 2013?

Well, another year of book buying is done and as you look at your book budget for 2014, what do you deem as your single best purchase on Logos in 2013?

For me I was surprised, as it turned out to be the International Standard Bible Encyclopedia. I have had Anchor Bible Dictionary for some time, so I was resistant and did not see the need for ISBE. However, I kept bumping into links to ISBE and I took the plunge. Even in the short time that I have owned it I have been pleasantly pleased how much I have used and refer to it as a supplement to Anchor.

So what is your top purchase?

For me, it was William Barclay's New Daily Study Bible series.

I have a lot of the volumes in paperback, and I neglected to use them since almost all my study takes place in Logos. Now I have them in Logos, it's one of the first commentaries I go to for an overview of a passage I'm studying.

Quite a surprise as I was not expecting it, but the 500 Book Mega Pack turned out to be the "best": not primarily because of the content of the Mega Pak, but because it reduce the cost to me of the Master Bundle (ver.2) by more than the cost (to me) of the Mega Pack (thanks primarily to dynamic pricing).

Probably the IVP Old Testament Dictionary upgrades. The IVP Dictionaries are very good resources and I have come to regard the IVP dictionaries as my "go to" dictionaries before turning to Anchor Bible Dictionary.

I really had not even realized how much more disciplined I have been in not ordering nearly as many books in 2013. In 2012, my Logos orders was in the thousands of dollars, and in 2013 in the hundreds.

Instead I invested in a Windows 8 tablet in order to run the full Logos 5 on a mobile device. I guess the Surface Pro 2 was my best investment related to Logos, and it has replaced my desktop, my laptop, and my iPad.

There are still some big Logos purchases ahead for me. I want the ICC commentaries - note I said "want" rather than "need". Actually, I am strongly considering just buying the newer volumes in the ICC (post 1968) since the older ones are available free in PDF format. That could save this cheap old man a few dollars, especially since I already have a number of the newer ones in the set. That is something I would never have done in past years.

Of course, it would be preferable to have the old ones in Logos, too. But I am not sure how much I would use the older volumes in the set, and "tagging" in a commentary is just not as big a deal for me as it apparently is for most other folks. Commentaries, while I love them, come late in my study process, and I just basically open them to the passage I have been studying.

Strange but thoroughly interesting volume: Prophets and Prophesy of the Ancient Near East (which includes the texts and translations). Not a complicated volume and really quite human (the behaviors).

That's been a real eye opener for a whole series of odd texts in both the OT (Saul especially), and the NT (the crowds reacting to Jesus, Peter, and Paul).

Book NOT Received in 2013: That'd be the XJoshua update from the Biblical DSS. I'm sure it's the complaining Israelites in the wilderness; they have it.

Michael: I broke down and got the Matthew volumes (ICC). Heavy-going reading. I rationalized I was missing the Albright volume in AYB. Maybe you have successful rationalizations awaiting you in 2014!

What I would consider to be my best purchase in 2013 is not something in my main field of interest. I would consider the resources dealing with the eastern church to be my best purchase since I really knew so little about the eastern churches. This includes not simply the Greek churches but the Russian as well (India yet to come). There's always more to learn.

And, like Bruce, I was finally able to bring The New International Commentary on the Old and New Testament (NICOT/NICNT) (44 vols.) into my library.

I appreciated the upgrades this year for the commentaries I currently have, such as the New Beacon Bible Commentary Upgrade 2 Collection (4 vols.), the New Beacon Bible Commentary: Genesis 1–11, the New Beacon Bible Commentary: Ezekiel, the UBS Handbook Series Upgrade (6 vols.), and just so many more.

For me it would have to be the IVP Black Dictionaries OT. I already had the NT ones, but with the new sale, OT was a little bit cheaper to get, plus the price included the second edition of DJG. I would also have to go with my Silver Upgrade. Hopefully in 2014 I'll be able to move up to gold and then customize with other commentaries and resources from there until Logos 6 comes out.

Not really a single purchase, but the ones that I really glad that I made are the purchases of Moody Publisher books (including some Ryrie and MacArthur) that I made between April 10-19 right before they pulled Moody out of Logos. I am thankful every time someone on the forum asks, "Where did the Moody books go?" [:)] I am thankful that Logos gave us a heads up that it was about to happen.

Well Donovan I would say that my best purchase from Logos would be The Verbum Capstone Version. I was up late one night studying for school and decided to do some searches for Bible software and Logos Bible Software showed up. After investigating it a bit I decided to sleep on it to see if I was really led for the purchase and not just my flesh that wanted it. So God woke me up the next day with this still in my mind. And since I thought it may be a great deal to have that Library I was not sure if it would let me down like the University that I am attending, about Catholic Issues. I had been attending Catechism for two years and was about to be accepted by the Church as a full blown Catholic and be able to take Communion after a conditional baptism. Now I have been able to resist the shots where I attend University do to my strong belief in the Catholic Church do to it being a Baptist founded College that I was attending.

So I opened up my laptop an investigated more about this software decision and prayed really hard about it. So I called up Logos and behold I got a hold of the Catholic Studies Salesman who turned me onto the Verbum Capstone which I did not even see on the website. So then I investigated this proposition with God to lead me. And then told Mike Wheeler that I wanted to buy this package and told him that I was attending school for Religion. So then he gave me a great deal of discount on it for being a student currently attending school. And then he sent me an email about the Verbum Capstone Plus so I had to buy that as well, not because I needed it but because I wanted it after a little experience with the original package. So now I am debating to whether buy the training videos or just learn on my own as I go. There is so much wonderful information available on these forums. But it takes a while to go through the threads. So now I am off work and part of school for a month and just need to pray about the training videos but do not have that much time due to the one month ending in 30 days. I would love to hear some comments about the training videos. And hopefully with God's help I can decide soon about buying them. I already have a Ph.D. for biblical studies but always trying to learn more about everything in God's wonderful creation. So how about it, are the training videos worth the extra cash I would need to fork up for them? I know some people must have used them do to the terrific comments that I have found so far on this forum. I am a bit of a slow learner, maybe do to my age, I imagine. But need some guidance on whether to put out the bucks for the training videos. Please?

The Mega Pack keeps looking better and better as I discover new things in it. I'm glad I got it as it's nicely branching my library out from my discipline.

One of the best definitely was picking up N. T. Wright's The resurrection of the Son of God on sale in March. I love that book.

Best purchase?

Certainly G. K. Beale's N. T. Theology comes to mind immediately. But that could be because it sat in the bundle-dungeon for so very very long.

N. T. Wright's Paul and the Faithfulness of God gets a nod too. I probably won' t get around to reading it for several months, but I rank it high as a best purchase because the Logos version was available very shortly after the dead-tree version hit the shelves - supporting timely Logos releases of brand new major releases is a top priority.

The best-value award goes to the Hudson Taylor collection. A broken-bathroom-fixture inspire flood in April damaged about 5 dozen books. I replaced many with Logos versions, or pocketed the insurance $ as I already had both Logos and printed versions and decided to not replace the printed version. One volume though was a rare numbered limited edition volume of selected works of Taylor from Dust and Ashes publications. Collected about $200 for it but a replcement was not to be found. Then the Logos CP multi volume collection came along for just $18.00.

The Works of Thomas Manton gets the public-domain vote.

I have found most of them very good... Job and Matthew are volumes I have found very good. Obadiah through Malachi is a very good volume too.... It is a more devotional commentary but for my daily studies I have found it quite valuable.

Faith that does believe in the providence and in the final triumph of God experiences disappointment and delay. But in the writer’s view, these opponents are now jaded and cynical and do not seek the return of Christ. It would disrupt their indulgences. Apparently the scoffers have bought into one of the current philosophies that saw the world and life as a cycle, going nowhere, much like one finds in the melancholy musings of Ecclesiastes. But, says the writer, the heretics ignore three facts, and they do so deliberately. Fact number one: the word of God. By the power of God’s word the heavens and the earth were created. By that same word the world was destroyed. It has happened, and it will happen, but next time not by water but by fire. That there would be a final universal holocaust was a belief rather widely held in late Judaism as is evident in apocalyptic literature, including documents found among the Dead Sea Scrolls. Many Jews, Christians, and subscribers to other religions believed in a fiery place of punishment for the wicked, but 2 Peter also registers belief in an all-consuming fire accompanying the return of Christ.
