This post is mostly to demonstrate how many books Logos does not have from among the ones listed in bibliographies of other (current) books it does sell.

I personally don't need to read more of these sorts of books on debated issues. I've either pretty much figured out where I stand by now on these issues, or I've decided that it doesn't matter to me. But I still enjoy helping other people who are struggling to come to some understanding of them. Just this evening on another thread, I found myself recommending that a user check out the books in a bibliography at the end of a chapter in Across the Spectrum: Understanding Issues in Evangelical Theology. Unfortunately, as I soon discovered, none of those books are available in Logos, so my advice wasn't very helpful to him.

I decided to have a look through all the Further Reading sections at the ends of chapters in this book and see how many of them Logos does have. Not many. I've linked the ones it does have. I've starred (*) of the ones it doesn't have yet but which I know and would recommend, or that are by authors I respect, or that are multi-view books by publishers I trust, or that I just have a hunch Logos should consider getting. Others of you might know others of these books and recommend more of them. So my asterisks are just a start. (There are a couple of duplicated titles on this list.)

I found myself recommending that a user check out the books in a bibliography at the end of a chapter in Across the Spectrum: Understanding Issues in Evangelical Theology.

    Chapter 1: The Inerrancy Debate

*Beale, G. K. The Erosion of Inerrancy in Evangelicalism: Responding to New Challenges to Biblical Authority. Wheaton: Crossway, 2008.

Thanks a lot Rosie, very helpful!

Unfortunately your list also shows the overdue cross-shop search feature on the Logos websites: Your very first starred example is available in Vyrso at https://vyrso.com/product/14581/the-erosion-of-inerrancy-in-evangelicalism-responding-to-new-challenges-to-biblical-authority (it may be the only one, I didn't check the whole list but remembered Beale since in another thread we discussed money spent on Vyrso libraries and I don't consider all my dollars in Vyrso wasted)

    EDIT:

Looking through, I see Jack Deere in ch.14: https://vyrso.com/product/26157/surprised-by-the-power-of-the-spirit

Thanks! I tried to check Vyrso for every one that I thought might have any chance of being a "trade" type book rather than strictly scholarly. I did find (and link) one Vyrso book (Menzies, Robert P., and William W. Menzies. Spirit and Power. Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2000), but I guess I missed at least one other. I've edited my post to remove the * and add a link for that one. Can't guarantee there are no others.

And you're right, that cross-shop search feature needs to be implemented ASAP! It was a pain in the neck copying and pasting the title into both websites to search for all these books.

Does this thread mean that one can not use Logos to professionally research a book?

And, from an other thread, would it cost too much to do all of your research for a book using just Logos until Logos adds the 24 hour rental option with full Logos search to find books needed?

Depends on the subject matter, and what your level of "professional" is (someone like N.T. Wright, or someone much less erudite), but you probably can't do all your professional research for a book in Logos even if you owned everything in their entire catalog.

I would use Google Books instead (even they aren't 100% complete) and then buy whatever books you need full access to, or borrow them from a print-based library (Inter Library Loan if necessary). Digital isn't quite there yet to be your sole means for researching a book.

Does this thread mean that one can not use Logos to professionally research a book?

I'm not sure at all what you want to communicate. What do you mean with "professionally research a book"? Find out that it exists (or presumably exists, since it is referenced by another author)? That it exists as buyable on the Logos or the Vyrso website?

This thread means mainly that the 40k total library of Logos is still not large enough and misses relevant literature. You didn't know that? And it shows that the separation of Logos and Vyrso shop websites generates false negatives when looking for a book, i.e. Logos loses money on potential sales which aren't found because they are on Vyrso instead of Logos. Just found another: Ch. 9 DeMoss https://vyrso.com/product/24422/holiness-the-heart-god-purifies

Btw, I can't understand why Logos doesn't carry ALL the Three/Four/Five views on xxxxx books, since they are highly relevant to get an overview of the consensus and various positions in nearly all areas of theology. [NB: And if the authors of "Accross the spectrum" didn't have Grudem's edited Four Views book in Ch. 14, they most likely would have referenced his https://vyrso.com/product/14587/the-gift-of-prophecy ]

I definitely agree on the Logos vs Vyrso mess.

Since my favorite book gets no respect (it's in Vyrso of course). Billy's devotional will never see the light of day as a Logos devotional.

I also joke about Vyrso not being for 'scholars' as a poke at Logos and the concept of intellectual layering.  I could understand a distinction of fiction (the someone's cowboy book) vs non-fiction (why the earth used to be flat with a bronze globe over top). But that doesn't appear to be the Logos/Vyrso distinction. So I try to avoid Vyrso altogether, until they climb off their (unintended?) snobism.

Robert Pyne's book "Humanity and Sin" is in logos as part of the book "Understanding Christian Theology" which is a combination of ten separate books on areas of Systematic Theology.   It is Chapter 6 in the book.

Charles Stanley's book on Eternal Security is also available in Logos.

Nice work, Rosie. Great thread. I hope Logos keeps after these; looks like a great list.

I assume he means "do the research required to write a book that comes across as being done professionally, not a hack job." I don't know of anyone who has written a book using only Logos as their research material, and it would be pretty lazy to do so. Writing a paper for seminary, one could probably do it. But before the digital book era, would anyone write a book that requires research, using only the physical books they have in their own library as sources? I doubt it. It's no different now with Logos libraries.

Thanks! I have edited the list to reflect those corrections.

NB.Mick, I skipped over looking up the DeMoss one on either Logos or Vyrso book because it was published by Moody and I thought Logos had lost all Moody books. I forgot that they were able to keep the Vyrso ones.

Thank you so much for this post, Rosie.  Across the Spectrum is indeed a very good book and a great resource for researching these debated issues.  I just purchased a Logos copy several days ago to take advantage of the Scripture links even though I already have the print copy.

Revisiting this post 10 years later to see what is now available from Logos and what still needs attention/suggestions/votes.

Revisiting this post 10 years later to see what is now available from Logos and what still needs attention/suggestions/votes.

Thank so much, Rosie, for doing this work. I voted for many of the still not available works. I really hope Logos actions upon the suggestions, those are most often books by eminent authors, from the catalog of staple publishers Logos is regularly doing business with (Mark Barnes once wrote that suggestions are rather treated on a publisher-by-publisher basis than individually). On the other hand I think we can congratulate Logos and ourselves that so much more now is available than back ten years ago.

Have joy in the Lord! Smile
