I'm doing a study of James as well, with a plan to teach it later this year. I picked up a number of Logos books on James late last year, but have only read through one so far.
One of the most enjoyable resources I've found is the free videos through Sacra Script: http://vimeo.com/sacrascript
The guy covers a number of books, including James, and goes through them with a depth that is exactly what I love to see and hear. He doesn't just cover James, but where the book fits into the history of the early church. Knowing that gives you a better perspective of why the book was written and even why things might be phrased a certain way.

I would recommend with James to work very hard to see the connectedness and interweaving of themes from one section to another. Always ask yourself, "Why is he talking about this now?" And don't try to understand a section as if it is Proverb, devoid of the context. James is so rich and each saying so pithy that that is the temptation.
I recommend getting some good resources to walk with you:
Varner's New Perspective on James is helpful: https://www.logos.com/product/16439/the-book-of-james-a-new-perspective and then he took that and made it bigger and better in his EEC, which you can buy or if money is tight rent for $6/month: https://www.logos.com/product/35585/evangelical-exegetical-commentary-rental
Moo's James Commentary is very helpful too: https://www.logos.com/product/3449/pillar-new-testament-commentary-the-letter-of-james
But more than anything just take lots of time in the text.

Jacob has listed my two favorites. Since I am in the process of compiling a study guide on James, I have a rather extensive bibliography. Other than the two listed by Jacob, I would also recommend
The Interpretation of the Epistle to the Hebrews and of the Epistle of James by the Lutheran scholar R C H Lenski
The Epistle of James: New International Greek Testament Commentary by Peter H Davids
The New International Commentary on the New Testament: The Letter of James by Scot McKnight
If you would like more, let me know. Note that I tend toward the more scholarly works. If you are more interested in expository material, I can probably compile a list of those also.

Absolutely. There is no substitute for this—In the original language if possible.

I agree with Jacob , if your commentary is taking the book of James like a book of proverbs, you need a better commentary. I recommend Thomas Manton.

This was the first volume in Zondervan's Exegetical Commentary series. I have it in paper. I was very impressed.
