TIP: Creating a Daily Devotional from a Vyrso Edition Resource

Reading plans and devotionals can be a bit finicky sometimes. Hopefully Logos will create some method for fine tuning them in the future. Wink Additionally, Vyrso resources are a great value, but since they aren't manually tagged, they can't be used in the "daily devotional" section, even when a calendar date is present.

With the new year here, many of us would like to begin new devotionals. Today I picked up the Celebrate Recovery Daily Devotional (on sale currently!) and decided to learn a little more about this program by reading through their devotional. Here is how I set up a reading plan to keep my readings on track for the calendar year.

  1. I noticed that each of the 365 daily readings had its own heading in the TOC (See the left side of the first screen shot). Without that tagging, this system will not work. [Since Vyrso editions are automatically converted from the publisher's ePub file, we are dependent upon the publisher to have added this tagging in the original documents.]
  2. The next step is to determine how many readings are needed. In addition to the 365 daily reading headings, there are 8 additional headings for a total of 373. If you don't account for all of the headings, Logos will divide up the readings willy-nilly (i.e. some days you might have 2 readings... especially annoying when the devotional has calendar dates and you want to read the "July 4" reading on July 4.) Wink
  3. Once you have determined the number of readings, you need to figure out the start date. In my case, there were 6 headings before the first Daily Reading heading. To force Logos to have the "January 1" reading on January 1, I started the reading plan on December 26, 2013.
  4. I "right clicked" on the December 31 reading and clicked "Catch Up To Here."

I now have a reading plan which starts on January 1, ends on December 31, and has a reading every single day. I will double up for a few days to catch up to one a day readings. At least, that is the plan. Smile

Great idea. I had given up on the idea of having reading plans for these books. But following your idea, I just set one up. Works great.

I hope Logos does something to make reading plans for other books easier, but I am practical enough to use whatever will work.
