INDEXING again. . .

Greetings to all. . .

I've read several posts on indexing problems, but it being so large, and none of the read posts answered my question.

A little background:
I have a gaming PC to run my L5 and have 32 GB RAM, 3.4. My library is 5540 books. Indexing can become quite a task. (I do have resources to run L5 very well).

Several days ago, I downloaded another book and after downloading it, the famous indexer started to work as usual. However, this time I got an error message that the indexer is working but along with this message I got this other message: "Intel Rapid Storage Technology enterprise: Controller 0; Disk 1: Detected." It seems that the disks are connected and disconnected. But, when they are disconnected I get no error message that my disks are un-available, the PC continues to work fine albeit very slow, almost to a halt, then it comes back and it is working well again.

Then the other message appears: "Intel Rapid Storage Technology enterprise: Controller 0 Detected; Disk 1 detected." Then indexing continues. However, it never stops! I have to stop it. And the computer locks up for a few minutes.

It seems that my problem is the RST for my SATA disks, however, it only happens very frequently when L5 Indexer is working. Other programs do not have this problem.

I looked at any problem in the forum concerning RST but I found none. Not to say this isn't any, I just did not see any. I also went to the Intel website but their site is confusing information concerning RST driver technology.

I did download a new and updated driver for the RST, but I am afraid because if I make a mistake I might loose my disks. Not a problem I am looking to have!

What relationship (if any), does the L5 Indexer have with the RST driver???

Any help out there from the those who know. . . ?

Blessings. . .

There may be a couple of people who frequent the forums who understand your problem and can help. However I suspect that you may need to contact tech support for this issue.

Al, some of the people to whom Fredc was referring may be those who got involved in the discussion at http://community.logos.com/forums/p/72668/506480.aspx

Not suggesting it is relevant but it does suggest that there are some people using Logos and RST who may be able to advise.

But the suggestion of contacting Logos tech support is a good one[:)]

How many disks, what size, and how are they configured e.g. RAID, Basic, Spanned?

None. It sees whatever is presented by the OS/driver software when querying for available space, reading/writing, etc.

Possibly. But I have a third party Power Management software which takes the optical drive offline when on battery. Then I would see RST messages that the drive was detected when back on power. But you may have an intermittent Controller issue.

Ummm! Doesn't speak well for Intel's software. You should query their forum for possible problems wrt your configuration.

    Hi Dave,

I have two physical SATA disks. The first physical is partitioned logically as F: and G: drives. Size of F: 293 GB; G: 265 GB.
The second physical disk is not partitioned, but it's the system disk as C: Size of C: 558 GB.
The physical disks are ATA WDC WD60000HLHX-0 SCSI disk device. I have the Intel C600 Series chipset SATA AHCI Controller.

Now, what is an intermittent controller issue?

    Thanks much.

"Intermittent" means it doesn't occur all the time[:)] The Controller is hardware/firmware that manages the SATA connectors on the motherboard. Generally one per board, but some boards may have an additional Controller providing extra connectors and functions. You would see any Controller or disk errors in the Windows Event viewer >> Windows Logos >> System.

Quite simple. Do an image/partition backup of all three drives before you update Intel RST.

    Hi Dave,

Ah. . . I sort of asked the question the wrong way. . . :-)

What I meant was what is it in terms of function: is it a hardware problem or software or firmware?

I've never heard of it before. Your answer makes full sense.

I did a re-install of the driver from the OEM disk, but it still does it. So, I am guessing that I might need to upgrade the driver.

I will look at the event viewer. I will post what I see.

Thanks much. . . really appreciate your input.

    Hi Dave,

I did as you instructed and I saw an error message in the event viewer concerning a bad cluster or a bad block on the HD. The location was Logos4\tyislwyw.14k\library~2\index.lxn file.

I then ran CHKDSK and it fixed the problem. No more error messages. At least up until this moment.

Thank you very much. . .

That file is part of the resource index, so that would account for the indexing problems. I'm glad it is sorted.
