In light of many debates about what is acceptable forum behavior ...

... I recommend that Logos state such even if it in one line that says, "Anything goes."

At the very least we are having repeated disagreements about what is acceptable and I do not see a link that is obvious or at least in an obvious place that delineates such behavior. So it might be in your best interests to make an official statement from company itself. Might I suggest a few things.

1. No links to anything that is not related to Logos Bible software or Bible software in general.

2. No profanity, vulgarity

3. No ad hominem attacks

4. Stay on topic within a post's thread

5. Stay on topic within a forum

I believe that would cover most of the issues.

Some that might need to be addressed ...

1. Can we link to other Bible software's web sites or even discuss them?

2. What happens if these rules are violated? Who enforces this - only Logos employees, or MVPs or all users can enforce and only by reporting abuse or by replying to an offending post

Finally I would say make this the TOP post in every forum permanently and then lock it so that it does not have a long discussion about the rules. Set them and keep them until you see fit to change them.

We have had at least one statement in the Forums regarding acceptable content (point 1) from Logos but it has not been enforced except in extreme cases of abuse (or to prevent leaks during the secret beta testing!). I think overall "behaviour" has been better than what was often witnessed in the News Groups (points 2 & 3). Points 4 & 5 are being discussed (in a slightly limited context) at http://community.logos.com/forums/t/7879.aspx

MVP's have no mandate in this context, but could be seen (respected) as unofficial arbiters where necessary.

Isn't someone at Logos against 'polices"?

While I feel your pain and I have seen a couple of links recently that I would have deleted in a heart beat (Had I been God, or even President of Logos)I am not sure that rules are the answer. What is truly being hurt by the discussions? I know that once I became aware of the topics and the types of debates that were occurring, I simply chose not to open those threads any longer.

Let's boil the rules down to two simple ones.

1. Love God

2. Love our neighbor

I understand why Bob is reluctant to lay down rules (except for "cloud" resource management[;)]) because ultimately we are self-monitoring, and like the TV we have a choice to switch it off (or not switch it on!). The spiritual values of loving God and Neighbour always excite me, and I've seen more of that on the Forums with a much wider (& deeper) audience than the Newsgroups.

I like these suggestions. Even if Logos doesn't want to make them hard and fast rules, I would be in favor of having them as guidelines, suggestions of courteous/proper behavior if you will.

P.S. I think it's ironic that this thread spun off topic so fast (with the opinion banter) in light of suggestion #4.

I thought the same thing a few days ago after wading through a repetitious thread about promoting competitors brought out the same post I'd seen in previous threads. It seemed like deja vu.

I'd also like some other easy-to-find basic forum documentation readily available -- like what are the various iterations of the icon next to each thread?

I don't like seeing profanity (I haven't yet here), and some of the attitudes need a bit of an adjustment, but I say let the forum regulate itself. There are enough good guys (generically speaking) to step in when needed and for that matter, no one is forced to read a thread.

Besides occasional uncharitable behaviour, I don't like promotion of non-logos material (with deference to Logos on that, otherwise, it doesn't matter to me because: a) I find Logos the best and support them the most, b) I STILL will check out other offers and sites, c) a little competition within the forums COULD make Logos a better company--more informed on what its users think and what people are attracted by. However threads as pure advertisment for ithers I am not for)

Yup, but remember, his opinion is just that and none of us are bound to it. Now, just think of the atmosphere of this forum, if my posts had been reported as abuse and deleted by either an MVP or a Logos employee. Profanity, vulgarity are one thing, having fun and taking a post off topic is another.

I wonder who those 3 men were that came to see Abraham, and told him that Sarah would be with child. Or could it have been the Holy Trinity wearing the business suite of the day (appearing as men) all 3 persons of the trinity...this is all just PURE speculation on my part. I always wondered about the the significance of the 3 men and which one was the Lord. [:)]

Profanity, vulgarity are one thing, having fun and taking a post off topic is another.

I agree that off-topic posting can be lots of fun; it helps to build camaraderie and probably makes people willing to come back and keep answering questions. However, at some point threads can stray so far afield that it strikes me as disrespectful to the original poster's suggestion/comment/question. Doesn't all this belly button talk diminish Kevin P.'s offering in some respect? Someone who wants to seriously interact with the suggestion (whether to disagree or agree) has to climb over all the banter. I don't suggest that an off-topic posting be deleted but that every forum user be asked to consider the impact of that type of posting. I think a set of general guidelines would be helpful to set with the self-policing of the forum.
