OT-Need OSX 10.4 for iMac

Hi guys, Merry Christmas. I have had limited access to post over the past days, but I have been able to keep up with many of the threads.
I need som help. A friend gave me an old iMac from 2001. It has OSX 10.1. The tools are so old, I cannot get it to browse websites or anything for my kids.
I talked with Mac Tech and what I need to get is a copy of OSX 10.4 (I could use 10.5, but I don't have the ideal amount of RAM). Apple no longer sells 10.4. Does anyone have a copy of this OSX that is not platoform specific to a Macbook?

Unfortunately I only have the Leopard disk that shipped with my Macbook. Sounds like that won't help you. Is it possible to increase the RAM of the iMac?

P.S. I have never seen 10.1, but heard the early releases of OS X are a trip compared to what we have now. It sounds like you agree!

this iMac was purchased back in 2001, so I am not sure what can be upgraded. I am, however, trying not to put any real money into this machine. I just want to get it working for my sons to play some games over the internet.

have you tried other World Computing (http://macsales.com/), they can tell you how much RAm the system can hold and it shouldn't cost much to upgrade it if you can. Amazon has 10.4 listed but it'll run you around $200 used and closer to $275 for new.

Are they selling it as an antique? When Tiger (10.4) was new Apple only charged $199 for a Family Pack with 5 licenses. If our company did not still have computers using 10.4, I would offer Joe ours.

I've got the MacTracker App and checked the data for both 2001 iMacs. The RAM maxes out at I GB, so Leopard would probably not be the best OS choice. However, assuming the machine is stock it may only have 128-256 MB of RAM. Depending on what games the kids want to play you may need to upgrade the RAM. Mactracker shows the machine has two memory slots that take PC 100 3.3 V 168 Pin SDRAM for a combined total of 1 GB

Thanks for looking up that info. This machine has 768 MB RAM. Semms odd, but that is what it says so that is why 10.4 seems like the best bet.

I checked into eBay and Amazon and the price is outragious. I upgraded to Snow Leapord for $30, so $200 for an oudated version seems a bit steep LOL

I also talked to Mac tech support about getting disks from eBay that might be installed. Apparently Mac does not do a verification like MS (which seems odd), so if you come up with a disk that is no longer in use on an installed machine, let me know what it would cost to get it from you.

Unfortunately, we only have a single Tiger disk with 5 licenses. I will check to see if we have any others on Monday. If we do not have a second disk, we must keep the one we have in case we need a reinstall.
