Flashcards for Greek and Hebrew 1.0.0 Beta 4 Release

The Android team is pleased to announce 1.0.0 Beta 4 release of Flashcards for Greek and Hebrew.

This is a new mobile application that works with word list documents in Logos Bible Software on the desktop. Please check it out and let us know what you think.

Some of my word lists have great font usage (such as one I generated in Leviticus 1).

But others have horrible arial fonts or something. (Such as Pratico & Van Pelt).

Dave the Pratico list (bad font) was downloaded many moons ago from Logos. The Leviticus list (good font) was generated using the wordlist feature in Logos (Add >> Add lemas from...).

One thing I found from a test list in Greek I built manually some time ago, as well as from a BBG list I downloaded from Logos (I think): the Logos document shows a column "Lemma" and a column "Card Front". The Card Front is used in Logos card view and will contain the "lexical form" for Greek vocabulary - this is what typically is learned, since it contains information relevant to determining e.g. grammatical gender.

Your app uses the lemma-column, not the "Card Front" as front side of the card. The Flashcards card front may even be empty if the lemma column isn't filled. I consider this an unfortunate bug - or is it by design?

After this morning's update the fonts for Pratico have been fixed!

I didn't see any release notes anywhere, so I can't check anything else.

The list is sorted by how you rank your recall for each card. I think there are three levels. Missed it, Got it on the back and Got it on the front. The cards will be sorted according to the ranking you give (after a complete iteration?). I do believe it would be very helpful to have an option to randomize (setting or manual randomize button) the stacks within those rankings.

It would also be nice to have an About/Help option that displays the version info.

For large decks, it's been suggested to add grouping, which would be awesome, but it would also be nice if it would remember the state so we could come back and resume when we don't have time to make a complete iteration; It would be a very useful default to remember state between runs, whether the application is paused or stopped and dump state only if backing out of a deck.

I completely agree. State saving and not forgetting that I marked "Got it" simply because I didn't have time to go through all 500 cards in one sitting.

I have a couple of things:

1. I am super excited to utilize this app. I think it is an overdue, and vital part of Logos' inventory.

2. Where the heck was this thing when I was in college and seminary. All that time spent writing out flash cards, only to let a buddy borrow them and LOSE them so I could write them again. SIGH.

3. I didn't pay much attention to the wordlists feature. A step by step to create some would be very beneficial to using this app. My search-fu may be weak, but I still can't find any help on this. Maybe a group on Faithlife to share would be helpful.

The Arial font isn't ideal, but it is serviceable and closer to Modern fonts. The thing I notice about both of the images above is that the second vowel point in each one is out of kilter, lagging to the left. I hope that gets tweaked and fixed.

Yes, without this the app is practically useless to me.

If I go all the way through the list, it starts over and only shows me only the cards I missed.

But every time I leave the list and open it back up, it starts from the beginning and shows every card.

Also, is there a way to sort by count?

I've used flashcard programs in the past, and the best ones automatically create daily plans. Something like 30 random cards. You go through those, then it takes the N cards you missed and adds 30 - N new random cards for the next day. And of course it remembers where you were if you exit.

David, I too notice the vowel pointing oddity but I can mentally shift that somewhat. I think it may be a product of the OS rendering of Hebrew, rather than the program and have no clue if it can be fixed.

Any word on an update to the app? I hate asking that. I know I'm not going to get an answer. But I'm anxious to see the next iteration of this app. It works very well, just looking for a little easier management of long lists (categories, saved state, etc).

First I want to say that this is a great app. As someone who learnt Greek over 20 years ago it is very easy to get lazy and to rely on your memory of key words. This app will help me stay focused. It is also a good way of adding function to the smart phone and which makes Logos even more essential to the modern bible teacher or student.

As a newcomer I have played with it a bit this morning - setting up some Word Lists of Greek words I should already know [:)] but have probably forgotten [:$].

Features I would love to see:

1. The ability for the state to be saved between runs. This is essential. Otherwise it can't be used to learn as you need to focus on the words you can't learn.

2. The ability for words to be randomised or sorted in some way. Otherwise you will remember words by context rather than by actually knowing it.

3. The ability to create daily plans as [user="TCBlack"] suggests.

Other flashcard programs I have used allow you to set criteria for how soon you see something based on how well you know it, so if there are three levels - got it front, got it back and missed it, then you would be able to set different repetition rates for the three categories, eg "Don't show me got it fronts for another month, shot me got it backs in another week, add missed it's to the pile of cards to show me again straight away".

But thanks for this great app. I look forward to seeing it get better and better.

If you click the Green MORE button it will drop down with a list, including an edit option.

That option remains for about 10 hours I believe, after which editing is turned off because it may dramatically change the thread.

I downloaded this app today, and am quite impressed already! I do have a few questions:

1) The main issue for me seems to be that I have a fairly slow internet connection, which results in the fact that I often cannot load any of the card stacks. Every other try I have to log in again. Success rate is maybe 2 out of 10. :-( Do others experience the same thing?

2) What would be the easiest way to create a word list in Logos 5 that contains all words in the GNT occurring between 5 and 30 times?

3) Is it possible to download a word list and open one while I am offline?

To create a list of all the words in GNT occuring between 5 and 30 times you:

1. Create a New Word List (Documents/Word List)

2. Click on Add then at the Reference box type in Matthew - Revelation.

3. Sort by Count.

4. Select all rows with counts between 1 and 4 and 31 to the end, by selecting the rows then right clicking and selecting "Delete Rows". This will take some time as you only seem to be able to delete rows displayed and selected on the screen to select, even if you have got more selected that are not on the screen at the time [^o)].

You will then be left with a list of all the words used between 5 to 30 times in the NT.

There's a faithlife group, Basics of Biblical Greek, working through the book of the same name (on sale now in MM). I've just shared word lists for the first couple of sections in the book that uses word lists (chs 4 & 6). Each chapter is a different list so it's easier to manage lists and it includes the greek pronunciations, so these lists should be well suited for testing, esp for people like me who are just starting in greek.

On a somewhat related note...I created a Faithlife group that has Vocabulary Wordlists for almost every major Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic Grammar. Most of these are available in Logos now. Just tried this today after reading the blog post on my Android tablet (Galaxy Note 10.1, Android 4.1.1.). I was excited to try it, especially on Android. I've tried other flashcard programs like Anki, etc., but Greek fonts with accents always come out wrong.

I installed the app on my tablet (via Google Play) and created a new Wordlist out of a chapter from the NT (SBL) on my laptop. Next, back to my tablet, I ran the app and synced, and it found the new Wordlist I just created. I'm happy to report that the Greek words showed up properly, accents and all. So far, it seems to work great. I tried a list from LHB from Genesis 1, and the Hebrew came through great on my tablet. I'm not entirely sure the Hebrew accent marks are correct (don't know enough Hebrew to say), but so far they all seem to match what I see on my Windows computer.

On a related note, I also downloaded the app and installed it on my Blackberry Z10. Everything worked as expected, which is great! I've been waiting for something like this for a long time. Thanks!

Does anyone know how import a word list into logos 5 with a mac? I have downloaded a couple of word lists for my Greek and Hebrew grammars, but I can't figure how to get them into the Logos 5. With Logos 4, I could find the find the file in my library and drop them in, but I don't see option for Logos 5 unless logos 5 is using the same folders.

Basically what I am asking is how do an file with a ".lbxvl" extension into logos 5 as a word list? Does make more sense?
