Obviously, we don't have much snow in Mississippi. However, years ago I went to seminary way, way up North - in Kentucky. Don't laugh because my Middler year we had the biggest blizzard in the history of the state. Three feet of snow fell and most of it stayed over a month. I had to drive 102 miles in every day from my student church to school (round trip) and they only canceled school one day all month of the blizzard. So I had to get used to driving in it.

However, that was 1977, so I am out of practice. And none of my neighbors have had much experience driving on ice at all. It will be an interesting morning. I have canceled our church K-4 school for tomorrow, and instructed my secretary to take the day off.

We enjoy snow down here, and everyone makes "snow ice cream" on those rare occasions when it comes. But this is an ice storm. And we are totally unprepared for that. Just hope we don't lose power.

In the previous War of Northern Aggression - you folks in the middle of the country (you aren't TRULY in the south you know) got snow, and in Florida, we had 6' of water invade our home. It hit about 5 miles north of my home directly, and killed something like 20 people. We lost everything we owned, and God blessed us hugely through the turbulent times that followed.

Now I live in one of the middle (in common parlance - southern) states (North Carolina) and am not thrilled with the idea of more snow, though I am happy its not hitting Florida again. In my little corner of the state, we have only 4 or 5 days of snow each year, and so they don't salt or plow the roads. They also don't cancel classes for snow.

I agree—a bunch of wimps. You should have grown up in northern Indiana and Michigan then you would know how to handle the snow. When I was in N VA I remember going to lunch and getting take-out so I could listen to the radio. I saw a couple of snowflakes on the windshield and they were already announcing early dismissal for the kids.

The weather is so different now. At times I have to laugh at it. I can remember in the 60's, 70's, and even the 80's, it would snow 3 to 6 inches and the notification was just that snow is coming. No shutdowns, no school closings, no state of emergencies. You would just put on the galoshes, heavy gloves and coat, and grabbed the shovel and salt. You went to school, you went to work, and didn't put too much concern on the snow.

How times (and generations) have changed. The forecast today is "A big snow storm is coming. Don't drive, stay inside unless you have to go out...", "Schools are closed in the following areas....", "There is a state of emergency.....". And guess what? When you prepare for all of this and look outside, the big snow storm is only an inch or 2 of snow with some blowing flurries. LOL [:O]

I would wager few people consume more of the delightful stuff. When I die, I would recommend selling any stock you might own in Dr. Pepper. They will certainly take a hit in their sales.

I would call NORTH Carolina "Truth in Advertising". I do like your mountains, though.

In 1977, with 3 feet of snow you just drove through it in rural Kentucky. When you slid off the road, you waited for some fellow travelers to come push you out of the ditch and back on the road. It was wild, and still among my favorite memories. However, in Mississippi, even back then, there would have been no fellow travelers to stop and help push you out of the ditch. No one would have traveled and nothing would have been open to travel to.

George, when you got to Church that day, and was the only one, I am sure the Lord was proud to see you!

... With Fl, it all depends on where you go. The coastal cities are more northern, the interior is more southern. That said growing up I lived on the coast, and my mother made the best grits. Butter salt and pepper. My dad would try to put peanut butter and jelly in the grits, but my sister and I wouldn't eat it. lol

I agree though, I'm not sure a state with "north" in the name can truly be a part of the south - which was the heart of what I meant with my original post.

I am sure that you realize, George, that Dr. Pepper was invented and sold long before Coca Cola. (Well, at least a year or two before that former cocaine addict invented Coca Cola.) By 1885, Dr. Pepper was already being sold commercially in Waco, Texas, and Dr. Pemberton started working on Coca Cola at least a year later in Hot-lanta. Dr. Pepper is a delightful blend of 23 fruit flavors. Hardly, "cherry coke and prune juice." I am a life long fan. I highly recommend drinking Dr. Pepper while working on Logos Bible study. Works for me.

I suppose I have taken us far afield from our purpose on this forum. Sorry about that, but the weather has impacted my judgment.

My best was about a foot on the western end of the Mass Pike. Went 30 miles without seeing another. Then just before the next exit a State Cop waved me down and 'requested' that I get off the pike. They were to have waved me off at the prior exit but were several hundred yards behind me. The officer that stopped me said that the officer that decided no to follow thought that I would be OK and I was. That was fun.

But then there have been days with 1/8 inch of ice and freezing rain and I stayed home.

I was in Dublin, Texas during the last day of production and bought several cases. I only have 2 bottles left. Drinking this is like drink pure liquid gold! If you are in Dallas you can buy corporate Dr. Pepper version with imperial pure cane sugar. It tastes close but not quite as good as Dublin.

What my siblings remembered was that there was no school for 6 weeks which severely cut into the summer. Of course, my brothers got out of school for haying.[:)] but canning didn't get my sister out.

South central Washington State ... Klickitat valley. Dad's great-grandfather homesteaded in the area. Still no family member could recall a worst storm since the 1880's. The storm I remember was in the early 1950's ... there's been nothing similar since.

I suppose it was the reference to haying that made me think it was earlier. In Indiana we raised mostly corn, soy beans, tomatoes, etc but not much hay though there are references in James Whitcomb Riley's poems (the Hoosier poet), and he was most definitely before my time.

There was an portly elderly gentleman who dressed in a black suit and white shirt who would come to schools every few years and recite Riley's poems from memory in a bass voice. I always enjoyed it. I think he looked a lot like the picture of Riley in Wikipedia (It couldn't have been Riley since he would have been dead for quite some time). I read "Out to Old Aunt Mary's" at my mother's funeral until I had trouble finishing. My daughter read from Robert Frost.

As it turns out, there's more than 150 instances of the phrase.

Now, using the exegetical skills taught in the average Bible college, I carefully reviewed all 150 instances to determine whether the 'north' described an area within Mississippi, or conversely described a recognized area of Mississippi.

As with the greek in the Bible, upper/lower case fails to be a determiner (absent access to the original Civil War papyri).

However, I WAS impressed that at logosres:blcw01ie;ref=Page.p_551;off=1399 'Northern Mississippi' was equated to the whole state of Alabama using the english translation for 'kai'.

However, turning to the title page of the writing I noticed another key phrase 'War for the Union'. A Yankee!

A Yankee. Ah Ha! I am glad your excellent exegetical skills led you to the root cause of this misleading and confusing data. I simply point out that the very Northern most point in Mississippi, bordering Memphis, TN, in the Northwest corner of the state is a lovely city named SOUTHhaven, MS.

When I was in seminary at Asbury, there were lots of students of the Northern persuasion there, and we became pretty good friends. But one night a group of them quietly gathered outside our small student apartment. The windows were open, and suddenly they all began to sing loudly, "I wish you was in the land of cotton. Go away! Go away to Dixie land!". I knew they were only kidding me.

If only there had been Logos Bible software back in those seminary days!
