Indexing stuck at 0%

I get a message at the top of my Logos page that says "Your library is indexing. Search results from some resources may not be available. Indexing may slow down your computer. (Pause indexing for 4 hours)"

This has been happening since last Saturday, February 8, I believe. I know it was happening Sunday. During this whole time the indexing message continues to appear everytime I load Logos. Last night I left Logos running all night long.

When I click on the X to close the message banner at the top of my Logos I get an exclamation point. Hovering over that, it says, "Your library is indexing. (0% complete)"

So it's stuck and not progressing.

Thanks,

Mike

Actually, nevermind. I noticed another post on the topic right as I hit "send." After checking that one I did the "rebuild index" command, and I can now tell it is progressing. Thanks.

[^o)] Did you have another computer open listing the posts? Because I'm typing now and I'm about to hit "send" and I don't see any other posts being listed.  I guess you meant "after" you hit send you saw another post on the topic and not "right as you hit send you saw another post on the topic." (get it?). Unless you were looking at other posts on your phone or some other device there's no way you can see other posts "right as you are hitting send" on your own post. [:^)] I know English is my second language, but somehow that didn't sound right or made sense; unless, of course, it's an idiom or some weird English expression in your sentence.

Anyway, the old indexing problem! I'm glad mine is over for now, but I'd sure hate to have to rebuild my index again.  That's a LONG process for me.  I'm even thinking of having Logos lock my Perseus Collection because it's just too much "junk" cluttering my searches and hard drive.  Well...not junk necessarily but a lot of useless resources that I'd be surprised if someone told me they use that collection for their sermon prep every week [:D].  Most of us just have it sitting there in our computers taking up precious space and honestly, I've tried hiding some resources, but that's a tedious process too.  Logos should have a "Hide Perseus Collection" command or any other collection or series that you don't really use.  I think it'd be much easier than the current "Hide Resource" tool they have right now.

With free resources get Logos to revoke your licence.

It was the same computer. I saw that it had other suggestions of similar problem reports.

Unfortunately, this is still not working for me after all. Everytime I reboot it starts the indexing over again. When I let it sit for a long time it stops at 58%. I tried to pause and "unpause" the indexing to see if that would kick it it gear. Unfortunately, that didn't help. It acts like it's not recognizing my pause request though the percentage doesn't increase. I actually want all my Perseus stuff. I use Logos for more than Bible study and sermon preparation.

I just started the process to try and generate the logs this morning. I may have to set my laptop up at work to allow it to continue. However, when I first started this thread I did put my logs out there originally. At that point the indexing was stopping at 0%. Doing a "rebuild index" helped to get me up to about 58% before it gets stuck. But there may be some hints as to the issue in the original logs. I'll repost when I get a log that is in effect when it stops at 58%. Thanks for your help.

Here is the latest log. It made it to 63% this time before getting stuck. Also, I can tell it's stuck, because the Logos icon in the system tray goes away (the one that you can hover over that says how much has been indexed).

    Hi Mike,

The indexer is crashing. Please open Logos again with logging enabled, and run the "Rebuild index" command in the command bar. If the indexer icon goes away again, but you still see a message that Indexing is running send me the log files.

You sent these after the indexer icon disappeared?

Yes. When you asked for the files again I went into Logos. It was in the middle of indexing again because it would start up automatically when I restart Logos after the indexer has failed. But I followed the instructions and did a rebuild index. This time it didn't go very long before the indexing icon went away. But the message is still at the top of the screen that says "Your library is indexing. Search results from some resources may not be available. Indexing may slow down your computer."

Lets try removing the files it was indexing and going to index to see if it will index without them.

    1. Close Logos 5.

    2.Open Finder.

    3. Press Command+Shift+G.

    4. Type ~/Library into the window.

    5. Navigate to /Application Support/Logos 5 (might say 4)/

    6. Move the ResourceManager.db to your Desktop.\

    7. Open the "Resources" folder.

    8. Move the 04GK.logos4 and  05GK.logos4 files to your desktop.

    9. Start Logos.

Re-post logs if the crashes again. If the indexer does not crash, run the "update resources" command from the command bar to re-download the now missing resource.

The advice Tommy gave was for a specific user and their problem. It does not necessarily apply to your problem. no matter how similar it seems!

Thanks Tommy. That worked for a while. Now it's doing it again. Here are the latest logs I generated this evening. Since that time I have added a few more resources.

The crash indicates an I/O device error outside of the Logos software i.e. from .NET, and it could be related to hardware. Start by looking for errors at the time of the crash (2014-03-09, 7:33 pm)  in the Windows Event viewer >> Windows Logs >> System (via Control Panel >> Administrative Tools). Also look for .NET errors in Windows Logs >> Application.

    Dave,

I am thinking that maybe you are correct that I have a hardware issue. Here is the closest line item in my System file for that time period:

I was looking for some type of built in "disc doctor" utility in Windows 8 similar to what I used to use in the Norton toolset, and what I believe I used as late as Windows XP. But I didn't see anything besides an optimizer. Analyzing the disc it said that it didn't need to be optimized. I did a malware check, with no suspicious results. After doing that scan I pulled up Logos again and the indexing crashed again. Looking in the system file I see multiple instances of messages that are similar to the one above. However, they are not always referencing the block address, though several warning messages list the same address. I'm not sure if the problem is related to just a few bad sectors on the disc.

My pastor is actually also the owner of a PC and networking service. I sent him the System log information and the response that you gave here in these forums. He's also a big Logos user and is the one that got me interested in it in the first place. Plus I bought the laptop from his company that I have Logos installed on.

    Thanks,

    Mike

It is. You should be able to right click the C: drive in Explorer and check for errors (the Optimizer is a defrag tool). Or start a Command prompt and run chkdsk c: /R to check for bad sectors.

If your HDD is showing bad sectors, you need to back up all your data immediately, and get a replacement or technical service ASAP. Bad sectors showing up means that the HDD is possibly on the brink of failure (e.g. no reallocation sectors left).
