Can anyone tell me if there's a big difference between these two books on Luther's theology? I have the first but thinking of purchasing the second.

Don't know the 1st one... The 2nd one is a standard mid 20th Century account that is still taken seriously today. Additional good treatments would include Oswald Bayer and Bernhard Lohse. Among the Logos offerings, I would pick the Lohse...

I seem to remember that Luther's theology is a contested area. That said, the standard works, all of them considered major works after decades of study, have mostly been named: Paul Althaus, Bernhard Lohse, Oswald Bayer. Often, two more names are named in the same list of "theologies of Luther". One is very obvious:
