Does anyone know the difference between this very inexpensive resource (Studies in Genesis), and these 2 more expensive ones (The Book Of Genesis Volumes 1 & 2)? Are they the same? I'm trying to find the one Spurgeon recommends in Commenting & Commentaries but I think these are actually the same resource. Maybe one is tagged as a commentary and the other not?
volume 1 of "the expensive 2 vol" says at the top: "THE BOOK OF GENESIS EXPOUNDED IN A SERIES OF DISCOURSES"
the other one says: "Reprint of new ed., carefully rev., published in 1868 by A. and C. Black, Edinburugh, under title: the Book of Genesis expounded in a series of discourses."
Looking at chapter titles they appear to be the same
Strange. Thanks Robert! So I'm assuming it must be the commentary tagging on the second.
The why is a mystery. the cheaper 1 volume probably came in a package long ago. The 2 volume set was part of the Classic Commentaries and Studies on Genesis which was in CP for not much more than 1 of the 2 volumes. Sometimes one wants to go hmmmmmmm
Yeah, bummed I didn't get in on the classic commentaries. I didn't realize that many of Spurgeons recommended commentaries were included in each collection.
Based on a comparison between the old 'Studies in Genesis' (which I have) and the new 2 vol edition (using the preview feature), there seems to be very little difference.
- Same publisher, same year - so the text will be the same.- The old version is tagged as a commentary, and comes up as such in Passage Guide.
The only differences I can see are:
- The old version has a foreward written by Peter Masters in 1979- Whereas the 2 volume edition has a very short preface from Candlish instead.- The new edition has been updated to arabic numbers instead of roman numerals in the main text (in the TOC it seems to be vice versa)- the old edition doesn't have page numbers
Even for the purist, there doesn't seem to be much need to pay the big difference in price. In fact, now might be the time to get the old one in case Logos pull it!
Stephen thanks for the heads up on this! I was close to purchasing the 2 volume but decided to wait. I just purchased the old in light of your response, and the possibility of them pulling it. I'm surprised that it is listed as a commentary because the Logos categoy it's in is monograph. Haven't attempted to search for it in the passage guide, but I'll check it out soon. It's funny Logos made an entirely new resource for the CC series for this one.
Edit: Yes works as commentary! Thanks again Stephen!
