Detecting Sales on Logos/Vyrso

I'm forever confused by Logos Marketing.

Just today, I decided to break down (once again) and get Kirsopp Lake. Given he's a PDF(s), it was a major decision, so I decided to use my Wish List. I just couldn't bear to call up Logos for another refund. Best not to take a chance.

That's when I noticed the item I just added to my wish list was on sale! I couldn't believe it. So I spent the next thirty minutes trying to determine if it was REALLY on sale? (At Logos 'sale' means, well 'something'.)

I guess indeed Kirsopp was on sale and a whole lot too! So I decided to see what else was on sale. Whoo hoo! Many I'd been watching for quite some time! In fact, the top one was so low, Amazon was threatening to block I-5 north of Seattle!

So I put these two links in my browser (these apparently don't catch the 'free' ones):

The Vyrso one is really interesting. Apparently 'Undefiled Intimacy' is on sale for $9.09!! Regularly it's apparently $199.98. Now is that a sale or what?? And read the description (if it's legal in the forum):

'The commentary you are about to be exposed to is not for the thin skinned or easily offended...only you and your significant other knows the ugly truth about the level of intimacy (or lack thereof) in your sacred home'

Looks like 'husband or wife' is pretty passe' in the sacred home.

About that $199 price on "Undefiled Intimacy". Price is probably just a mistake. The paperback sells for about $12.99, and other ebook versions about half that. Maybe they meant regular $19.99? Mistakes happen.

However, Logos marketing is confusing, and one would have to conclude it is often intentionally confusing and deceptive. For example, sometimes a resource that only Logos sells will be listed with an extremely high regular price that nobody on the planet charges, and the Logos "sale" price is the only price you could buy it for anywhere. (Wouldn't that make the Logos "sale" price really the regular price?) That is intentionally deceptive and happens frequently. They have gotten a little better about that, but it still often happens.

And when they do put the resource "on sale",(not the regular everyday Logos "sale price") they often base the advertised % discount on the basis of the fictitious "regular price", which is not the regular everyday Logos "sale" price, but a price which nobody sells the resource for. So you really don't know how much the resource is being discounted by Logos without doing research. Confusing, huh?

Over the years I have learned not trust an advertised "Logos sale" without doing some research before purchasing. You cannot just take them at their word.

Now what's confusing about that?

I guess part of the job of marketing is to confuse the shopper into believing he is getting a better deal than he really is. I was just surprised when I first realized Logos operated that way. I understand that they are business, but I didn't think requires such marketing. Still don't.

And I love Logos and continue to be a regular customer.

Just to clarify: Actually that's a data-feed error. The 'regular price' is fed by the publisher into a Logos system. This was discussed last year here: http://community.logos.com/forums/t/75388.aspx and I recall that Logos manually changed the price to a realistic (to not say 'true') value, but some days later it bounced back.

Michael, I think I understand what you are trying to say but I don't quite see it the same way. If I am reading your correctly you seem to imply that Logos is deliberately trying to deceive the customer. Logos has explained in the past how they determine the prices they advertise and generally I think they are consistent in how they do this. It is true that they are often generous in their determination of value but I don't see this as intentionally deceptive.

I totally agree with you that we all need to do our research before choosing to purchase and that what appears to be a great deal may not be much better than a regular deal. But let's not blame Logos if we don't do the research. When I purchase anything I need to go through the work to determine value.

I obviously can't speak for Michael, but my impression is the issue isn't really big at Logos HQ.

Misleading data from a known error in the data feed (thank you Mick!). 'Sale' labels plastered around, quite a few out of date, comparisons to who knows what.

Actually, I felt guilty after posting the thread, since the Arizona AG might go for me, for misleading advertising. I implied these were the sales at Logos/Vyrso. I realized that my title was probably not true (for non-Logosians anyway). Chances are good (a) there's more on sale and (b) the sale list is not accurate (as it turned out to be).

The secret motive for the thread was how much WORK you have to do, not to see if it's a good buy (which would be routine) ... but rather if it's REALLY a sale on the site. Can I put it in my Wish List at that price?

That's what took 30 minutes, perusing Logos.com pages to see what their definition-of-the-day was this week.

Unfortunately, I had to call up my 'significant other', as they say at Logos, and repeat the bad news. Presumably in our 'sacred home' defiling may be still up in the air. I thought that was a Mosaic issue, but maybe not.

Actually, that is my point. If nobody else sells the product, how could there be a regular price higher than one which Logos charges? Of course, most resources, sold by Logos are sold in other formats (book, other ebook, etc.), but there are some resources that only Logos sells. And these Logos only resources will sometimes list a "regular price" that is higher than the price Logos charges.

There were a few times that I naively bought resources from Logos because they were advertised as discounted a large per cent, only to discover that the actual discount from the price that Logos normally charged was much less. That struck me as deceptive, whether intentional or not. I do believe the resources were worth what I paid for them, but I would have waited on the purchases had I realized the actual discount was much smaller than advertised. I am a very trusting soul. [:D] But I learned better. And, yes, I do suspect that some of this was intentional.

I do appreciate the explanations. Thanks. And I do love my Logos software.

Michael I agree with you. I don't believe %off should be based on the recommend retail price but it should be based on the regular logos list price.

Another one you have to be careful with is dynamic pricing - it will say it is on 'sale' for x% off! but its not actually on sale! you are just been shown your dynamic price for the collection - makes it very hard to know what is what if there is a genuine sale on that dynamic collection. Still I love dynamic pricing, and suspect the problem relates to how the website software works rather than Logos trying to be deceptive.

This gets me too. I think Logos needs to change the way they do this. The site should clearly indicate when dynamic pricing applies and which resources you are missing so that we don't have to log in through a different browser to check.

I love the sales and community pricing and the Logos community, and I absolutely LOVE LOGOS software and use it extensively almost every day.

I also have learned never to trust advertised retail prices (which often do not come close to reality) or sales prices or % discounts at Logos. I I have been burned by making a quick buy only to realize later it was no deal at all. But only once and I kept the book. Now, I never buy based on Logos Word.

I just don't trust that part of Logos and always do outside research, which means I buy less, because I don't always have time to do the research. It really shouldn't be that way.

Temporary solution to the Browser problem:

Rather than open a new browser or log out of Logos, I have developed the habit of opening an incognito window, which almost instantly opens a window that is not logged in.

Changing their price is really realistic. But they should inform the consumers beforehand.
