new here

hi first of all,

I just recently started teaching/ministering a college group at church. Its my first time doing

any teaching of the bible. But i believe God is calling me to this. One day i would like if God wills to plant a church. For a beginner like me do i need logos software. Well we don't need it but for someone thats just starting to build skill in teaching the bible should i get logos or wait a little? Right now I'm using hard copies of Weirsbe commentary (old and new test) as well as Mathew Henries Commentary. I also have "strongs Concordance". Im doing fine for now. Its teaching me to be diligent in my study and really search the scripture.

I currently can't get logos (for financial reasons) but When the time comes which base package should i get? I think i narrowed it down to either the silver or gold (leaning more to silver). Also are there other resources that would be good for me? Thanks God bless

I'd like to congratulate you for stepping out and listening to God's call in your life to teach the Bible at your church. May this be the first of many times and may God use you in powerful ways.

It is great that you are asking about about tools that can enhance your personal study of God's word. You can do that through paper books and that has been the way for hundreds of years. Yet we have amazing opportunities in our day and age to study the word like never before through digital software. Of course coming here you would expect to hear us recommend Logos and that I highly do. Shop around and after consideration when you are ready to purchase you will find that Logos is, in my opinion, the best overall Bible software in the world.

I also hope you take time to hang out in the forums here for you will learn lots in doing so. I learn something new almost every day.

Hi Ben and welcome. I recall many forum posters in the past saying that the Essential IVP Reference collection is a pretty good bang for the buck: http://community.logos.com/forums/p/48285/358193.aspx.

You mentioned Wiersbe. Along with him, I like McGee and Courson, as I see them in the same category and good for application/illustration.

You can always download the free engine, add a few things, and migrate to a package as finances allow.

Silver is a great base package. You wouldn't regret getting it.

There are also several great resources that will never appear in a base package. You will find several threads about recommended priority resources. If you sink all your funds into a large base pkg, you don't have funds available to add to that pkg.

The IVP Essentials Dictionary set is one of the highest recommended add-ons.

If you will spend some time on the forum, reading, and asking questions, you will be better prepared to make your purchase of the resources that are best suited for you.

When you get ready to buy, you will find that calling a salesman can be very helpful in making sure that you get the best deal available to you.

When you begin using a Logos library, it will be a paradigm shift. You will not believe how quickly you can access material from the resources in your library in ways that would be impossible with a print library.

I have taught a Sunday School class for over 45 years. Logos enables me to do things in my class that would be impossible without the software library. I share material from my Logos library every week.

Ben, it sounds like you have some fine plans for serving God. I pray that God will bless your endeavors.

I've been using the software since the 90's and love it. To answer your question, I would say it depends how would answer a number of questions including:

How tech-savvy do you consider yourself?

If you are comfortable with the computer and appreciate what a digital library is capable of, Logos is worth the investment.

Are you using the original languages?

If you are using the original languages, you'll want a base package with the original languages. Print versions of lexicons, grammars, etc can be pretty costly. Original language resources are a real value with Logos.

Do you want to be portable?

Using Logos you should be able to set up your pastor's study almost anywhere.

As you can see, I consider Logos a real asset in preparing for my preaching and teaching. The walls of my study are lined with books, but more and more I rely on my digital editions for ministry.

Perhaps you may want to "test the waters" with the Faithlife Study Bible?

I would echo everything Bruce just told you. Also, you might take a look at this web page for information of Logos' capabilities. Although you will not get the full benefit without having the application, you can learn much of its value.

As far as tech savy. Im very tech savy ha. I have have a mac setup. I currently write out my notes on my macbook pro and transfer them to the iPad in PDF. I use the iPad when I'm teaching.
