Links to maps

Links to maps do not exist or do not work well. In Anchor Yale Bile Dictionary I saw this:

NAG HAMMADI (26°03´N; 32°15´E). A site near the Egyptian village of al-Qaṣr...

It would be nice just to click that coordinate link and see a menu of decent maps in Logos (if exists) including Google maps, and after my selection it would show the location on the map.

I think the problem with the Logos maps is that they are pictures, not computer maps, and often quite naive.

Providing a proper map system for the Logos users might be a major effort, and maybe expensive to buy.

I am not sure what is the usefulness of maps from theological point of view, but I just like them.

Veli, your suggestion is just the best.

Unfortunately (and strictly guessing), most of the Logos developers are men (who of course are very reluctant to 'look at the map').

For whatever reason, maps in Logos have been somewhat of a step-child. Logos does a bit of gee-whiz, maybe some right-click connects, and then quickly puts the maps away for another few years, before their wives/girlfriends find out about it.

I foresee the day using ones mobile, that one can do like Eusebius as one travels either virtually or for-real though the Holy Land, or up to Turkey, Greece, Italy. Wow, what a thrill. All of course, connected to ones favorite Bible software.

That's one major reason (actually the only one) that I have A-Company software. The maps plus associated pictures.

Just this last weekend, we were driving New Mexico and the GPS was updating our geological maps by the second, complete with stratigraphic columns (all of course created in what ... 3 days or so maybe?).

Maps are definitely a great area for Logos to think about. I imagine it'd be great also during a sermon. I know I'd probably wake up. For sure.

Ouch! I thought that applied mostly to stopping to ask for directions when lost. I love maps and my experience is that most men like them too.

I would love better maps in Logos too. As I have said lots in the past. I would love to see the Carta maps in Logos!. Is there any hope?

Maybe I was over-generous with my comment about gendered map usage.

During our New Mexico jaunt, our tour host (the other person in our vehicle) managed to GPS us into the secure area of Los Alamos labs. Luckily the guard thought we looked too stupid to be terrorists (after we giddily pointed to our GPS as the real culprit). Goodness.

But that was before our tour host decided a route not recommended by our GPS would be just perfect. It was only with the promise of geological paleoproterozoic outcroppings (phaneritic of course), that the route was gently changed.

I don't know if this is worth Logos' time. If I copy those coordinates and paste them into Google search (eliminating the semicolon) I can quickly get to a map of Nag Hammadi. It isn't that much work.

I'm not against good maps, BTW, and Logos itself doesn't have the best set. Many would like to see a really fine set of maps available in Logos. Carta maps have been mentioned a number of times.

The value of discussion forums is that mostly as a byproduct (in parenthetical info) all sorts of useful info emerges for the users!

I'm no developer, but surely it's not that hard to write a script that autolinks coordinates, the same way they already do with web links and Bible references?

hmm - I don't think it's quite that simple (in development that is) - although conceptually it is.

It would be a really neat addition to the functionality though.

Veli wanted a right click menu item to link to relevant Logos maps. The problem I see is that you must tag maps with geographic coordinates first. Then you must tag resources with geo coordinates. AFAIK none but the general map that you find in Biblical Places has geo coordinates and no resources have them tagged. So, yes, it can be done. It probably is not just a matter of writing a simple script. But we are both speculating.

Veli can easily get what he wants without Logos doing a thing. I'm OK with that. Maybe something better will be included in L6.0. maybe we'll also get some more really good maps in L6.0, too.
