Trying to Understand Layout Behavior

Could someone take pity on me and straighten me out where the behavior of layouts is concerned? My issues are:

1. Is there no way for L4 to automatically load the layout I want by default instead of always reverting to the last one I used?
2. Is there a way to clear a layout so, for instance, if I select a guide just the guide opens on the screen? Right now it seems if I have a layout open and try to use a guide the guide always docks into the layout. Is there a quick way to clear the screen and load a guide?
3. Do people get around these problems by creating a "blank" layout? Or are some of these things on the "list" of things coming in future updates?

Any assistance to clarify these things would be much appreciated. I'm kind of missing the way a "workspace" worked in L3 vs. "layouts" in L4. Thanks!

1.  I do not believe so, it will always re-load the last "set-up"/layout you had on your screen. (It assumes you will want to pick up where you left off)

2.  You can create a blank layout (I did but don't use is) OR you can add the "CLOSE ALL" command to your shortcuts.  (type close all in the command bar then drag it to the short cuts)

3.  See above

If I do not want to use the last set up (not ness layout) I had on screen when I open V4, I will either open a lay out or click "Close All" command that I added to my short cuts and start from there.
