Logos should provide a layout that shows all the Scripture being used in church (and encouraged in the home) for a given date. This includes anything from the following list as selected by the user:
- text(s) upon which the sermon is built - manually entered
- lectionary readings (with ability to check the passage which is the basis of the sermon) - derived from lectionary with user override/choice capabilities
- Sunday school lesson references - manually entered
- Sunday school lesson reading derived from lectionaries such as the International Standard Sunday School Lessons, the Narrative Lectionary or other published materials - derived from lectionary with use override/choice capabilities. Note that many of these provide readings for weekdays as well.
- Religious education such as small group studies of particular books - manually entered
- Morning/Evening prayer or Liturgy of the Hours - derived from lectionary with override/choice capabilities
- Any denominational or church sponsored reading programs (Moravian daily text, Presbyterian Lenten reading challenge ...)
- Readings for other days that have been selected specifically for their relationship to todays passages should be easily accessed/identifiable
"Why on earth would I want that?" is what most of you are probably wondering. No MJ has not gone off on a tangent. Imagine when writing a sermon or presentation having at your fingertips what members of the congregation have been exposed to recently. You can pick supporting verses that you know are familiar and reinforce their knowledge. Or you can see where you need to adjust your level of detail based on their exposure or lack of exposure.
Or you can base your choices for future sermons, small group offerings etc. based on knowledge of what has been recently covered vs. what has been ignored for years.
Logos could provide a display representing the entire Bible with color shading based on frequency of use / time span since use and allow drilling down to the detail for your particular church or ministry or personal spiritual study.
You weren't taught that you needed this because its a bear to do manually. But Logos can do it offering ministers a genuine chance to see how Scripture is used and taught in their particular setting. And once they can see, they can adjust to meet their ideal.
