Anonymous download

I was watching some training stuff at 4-14.org.uk and got a pop-up that Logos was downloading two new resources.

I was not expecting any new resources and so am a little freaked out. Due to my insane desire for privacy I am not very comfortable witht he whole synching thing, let alone anonymous dowloads onto my system. What if I am studying some personal sin and then BAM it ends up on a Logos server somewhere. Scary.

Sorry, got off point. Is there a way I can search my system to see what was downloaded. Nothing shows up in my account information and I am curious since I was not expecting anything. Okay, a little paraniod too!! I don't know that the download really even came from Logos at this point.

Any help at all would be appreciated.

Servers are the ultimate in I never read-I never tell and information rarely goes "BAM". But if you were to search the forums you would see that code with a few patches and a number of interlinears are what was downloaded.

Seriously, if you want to control when new resources get downloaded, you can go into Tools | Program Settings and set "Automatically Download Updates" to "No." Then whenever you do want to check if there's anything new, you can do it manually by typing update now in the command bar at the top of the Logos window.

There is currently no way in the program to see what new resources have recently been downloaded (however that is an oft requested feature so I'm guessing we'll see it in some upcoming release). The only workaround for now is to go into your Logos 4 Resources folder and view it sorted chronologically and look at the file names of the most recently downloaded files and see if you can decipher from the filenames what the resources are (another oft requested feature is a new column in the library with the filename of each resource so we can easily look up a filename and find out what resource it is).

Back on the subject of privacy, nobody will know what you're studying in your library just because some new resources download to your system. However you are correct in assuming that the synching is bi-directional. If you are taking notes on that personal study and you have "Use Internet" set to "Yes" in Program Settings, your notes will be synched to the server for use on your other machines (if you have any). Bob Pritchett gave a recent official statement from Logos in another thread; basically, he said that their assumption is that the vast majority of people will be using the product for sermon prep and the like -- things which they plan to share with others anyway (though perhaps these notes are in a rough draft form) -- and will not put anything personally incriminating in them. Logos employees aren't going to go snooping around in your files, and they do take reasonable precautions to back up their servers and secure them from hackers and the like, but there is no guarantee of privacy, and they suggest you don't put anything in your notes that you wouldn't want seen, just in case.

All of your Logos notes are stored on Logos' servers just so we can all download them and see what you've been up to.

In fact, some of us have a pool going regarding what your next sin is going to be.

I might suggest you turn off the automatic updates. Then monitor the forums when you have some free time for new release notices. When it is convenient you can type in update now and get them downloaded. This avoids the surprises to some extent and it allows you to update, restart, index etc when it is best for you. Just a suggestion.

If I remember correctly Bob said that they have some 700,000 customers and they don't have the time or the inclination to attempt snooping on anyone; it's a pretty big crowd to get lost in. With that said with your privacy concerned I would be more worried about keeping Send Feedback set to off (read: http://community.logos.com/forums/p/4703/64780.aspx ) than the program automatically downloading updated resources. Keep any personal information out of your notes (use a word processor or Note taking program that stores files locally) and you should be fine.

The issue of privacy has been raised several times on the forums regarding L4 vs L3. Admittedly this is a concern of mine as well. Although I "trust" Logos as a company for me it is purely principle.... Being a serious PC enthusiast, I do not like any software snooping on me or installing anything that I am not expressly aware of. Its kind of like maintenance coming to your apartment unannounced to fix"something" then never telling you exactly what they did.

Although L4 is not a true Cloud I see a trend going in general where developers are leaning towards the Cloud model and I tell you I'll not give up local hard drive storage and local PC privacy for anything. Logos has done a great job with the delivery of L4 even though it is in process and some of the central server auto update stuff they have implemented was to help the general user base that did not do these things themselves. I truly wish that the general user base would train up to the "level" they should be as opposed to policy "dumbing down".

Overall I'm very pleased with L4 just wish I was always prompted as to EXACTLY what I am downloading BEFORE it downloads like in L3... Just sayin'

The privacy issue bothers me as well. I changed my settings in Tools/Program Settings/Send Feedback to anonymous. Logos is bent on data mining their goldfish bowl of users and there is not a whole lot that we're going to do about it short of installing Logos 4 on a dedicated machine without internet access and then just connecting it to the net at intervals to get updates. (this may not be a bad idea for Windows in general - [:)]) In fact, I could see a whole lot more Bible study taking place if people did this.

So, in conclusion, I think that Logos is actually trying to drive us all further into the Word by making us to not want to be connected to the net, where we all waste time staring at the spinning smilies and youtube movies of cats.

Downloads from Logos will be accompanied by the Logos icon in the task bar. There was a download yesterday (2 actually). That's how to tell.

On privacy, downloading data cannot invade your privacy, since it is only giving you info, not taking any. It determines the need for the download by looking at a database of resources - a resource list. In short there's no way a download from Logos will upload anything beyond that resource list.

The only thing that might be saved on a Logos server are your notes, your other generated documents (found in Files on the right under "Open") and your layouts. But the chances of anyone finding those and attaching them to your name is very remote.

As an aside, your comments sparked some other thoughts that may, or may not relate to you personally. If they don't just ignore them. Maybe I'm being prompted to write this for someone else on this thread:

As a pastor, and as a man who has been delivered from some sin addictions, I can say with confidence that studying sin more (i.e. getting more information) doesn't bring freedom. Neither does more intense self-reflection. Nor does 'trying harder next time.' The promise for freedom lies outside of our hearts, souls, minds and strength. Freedom from slavery (addiction) to a sin can only be given the Spirit of God, Who does actually give it (Rom 8:9-14, e.g.)! This freedom was released for me through humility, dependence, prayer, confession, renouncing, faith in and waiting on God to act (Isa 40:29-31).

For me, having others help me go through this deliverance was essential. Of course, God could have delivered me without the help of others, but God often chooses to use others to do His work on earth. Humbling myself to receive such help probably was a part of my deliverance.

While I do not believe in perfectionism, I do believe that there is no slavery to a particular sin that cannot be broken by the power of God in this life. That is, God's power for us here and now can break our slavery to any sinful behavior. The devil and his minions would have us believe otherwise, but they are all liars. They would have us settle for defeat in an area of our lives, and then accuse us of being weak in that very area, and let our shame about our weakness reinforce our defeat so we continue to remain in slavery. This is one of those demonic schemes the Bible talks about. Another lying scheme is to get us to believe that if we can understand ourselves or our sin, we will have the power to free ourselves. Bologna. Another one is that all we need to do is try harder. Lies; all lies. The flesh cannot triumph over the flesh, and if it does, it's still the flesh, which Satan can easily defeat. Only God can set us free and empower us to live in freedom. Thankfully He does.

If you want to get depressed, study sin. If you want hope and freedom, begin by letting the Spirit who inspired the following passages breath them anew into your life and increase your faith that these things are true of and for you: Matt 5:6; Luke 4:18-19, Rom 6:18, 20-23; 8:1, 9-14; 2Cor 3:17-18; etc.?

Then pray, pray, pray and get others to pray with/for you. Prayer (both solitary and with others) is a key that unlocks many spiritual doors, including the door to freedom.

[I know this is a bit off-topic, but sometimes ministry trumps such things.]

Okay, thanks to everyone for the information.

The comment regarding personal sin was an aside. I am not dealing with anything I would be ashamed to have others know, however it may happen in the future so I will just keep my notes outside of Logos in that case. Thanks for the distinctions presented.

All in all the syncing problem was not the main point of the post, it was the download identification. Rosie, gave me some good pointers.

Kevin Taylor, you and I seem to be in sync regarding privacy. It is not that I don't trust Logos as an entity, I just don't trust any corporation to maintain my privacy. Thanks to Bob Pritchett for coming out and saying that privacy of notes was not guaranteed.

Richard, thanks for your personal testimony. I have actualy filed that away for a later time when I may need it.

Your post regarding the power of God is ALWAYS relevant to those of us who are warring against the bad guy and/or our own flesh. He can't get our soul but he sure likes to lead us to behavior that will reduce our usefulness, or at least make us THINK we can no longer be used. I thank Him for His power over sin and the honor I have of being used by Him in spite of ME.

Your post reminds me of an old friend who wanted to study secular humanism to be more equipped to refute it, so he dove in headlong to learn all he could. And all he ended up doing was talking ABOUT it all the time because that's what his mind was consumed with. So it's true that what we think is what we often become, be it for the better or not. I'm glad that His willingness and ability to deliver His children today and forever from anything that displeases Him is based on His love for us and His power working on our behalf and is not limited by human understanding or willpower.

Gee, all I logged on for was to see what these latest downloads are about, and a brother from the other corner of the country blessed me (Phila area here). Thanks so much!

For Win Vista/7 it's C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\Logos4\Data\<Random>\ResourceManager\Resources it's in a hidden folder so to navigate to it you'll need to turn on viewing hidden folders and files in your Folder options.

Just go into Tools | Program Settings and set "Play Sounds" to "No" and then you won't have to listen to that anymore. I never like having my software play cutesy sounds to me unless it's iTunes or something where it's specifically supposed to make music! A warning beep is one thing. But startup melodies and "ka-ching!" when I make a deposit into my MS money account? No thanks!
