Highlighting with Notes

Several weeks ago, I started going through the bible in Logos5, selected a passage, then right-clicked the mouse, and selected "Add a note to my_notes". Logos would put the little note marker in my bible, then highlight the text I selected with the Inductive selection I made and label the note with the beginning and end of my selection. Then I could type whatever insight I had about that passage and it would save the highlight and notes. Wonderful!

I must have done something while playing with fonts and highlight options. Now, when I select a passage and save a note, it places the note icon in the text, but does not highlight the selection at all nor does it capture the beginning and ending of the passage in the note title. Of course I can force a highlight independently, but this does not link the highlight to the note.

How can I reset or restore the note highlight function?

For the highlight to be applied to the selected text, you must click on Selection in the right click menu

The note indicator and the highlight will then show but only for the resource in which you created the note and highlight. If you click on Reference, the note indicator will appear in every resource that is indexed by Scripture in which that verse appears. However, the selected text will not be highlighted.

If this is not completely clear, let us know, and the will seek to clarify.

How can I reset or restore the note highlight function?

First, welcome to the forums, Ron.

Second, Jack explained what's happening, but this may not be completely clear to a new user.

Basically, it works like this: if you want to highlight a specific word or phrase, you need to use the 'Selection' reference (see Jack's screenshot). If you do this, you can choose any of your highlight styles and exactly what you want highlighted will be highlighted. But if your highlight is in a Bible, the highlight won't carry over to other versions. (In other words, if you highlight Jn 3.16 using 'Selection' in your KJV, you won't see that highlight when you open the ESV, or any other translation.)

If you want a highlight to carry over to other versions of the Bible, you need to choose 'Reference' instead of 'Selection'. This will carry the highlight over, but will mean that you can't highlight a single word or phrase. The highlight is attached to the whole verse.

Unfortunately, it gets even more complicated. Each time you highlight something, in either 'Reference' or 'Selection' you create a Note that is associated with the highlight. With some time and practice, you'll figure out how to use this feature to your liking, but it isn't usually intuitive for most people.

If you want your note to cross over versions, and you choose the 'Reference' feature, you can still add highlighting to specific words or phrases within the verse by adding an additional 'Selection' highlight, and copying the text of your note from the selection note file to the reference note file. But you won't see the highlighting from the selection notes in the other texts.

You can create highlights to create notes, or you can create highlights to be a visual aid when looking at your text (that is, you don't HAVE to add a note to the note file when you highlight...you can highlight simply for the purpose of highlighting).

Thank you for the kind welcome and direction. I've investigated the pages you suggested and found (like my layman's study of Scripture), that I have a lot to learn! I'll work on digesting it and applying it. It seems like more than I need, but it's nice to know there's flexibility.
