I noticed something in The Exhaustive Dictionary of Biblical Names that could be an error, and I would like for Logos to check it out, if possible.
According to Strong...
- 567 אֱמֹרִי [’Emoriy /em·o·ree/] n m coll. Probably a patronymic from an unused name derived from 559 in the sense of publicity, i.e. prominence; TWOT 119; GK 616; 87 occurrences; AV translates as “Amorite” 87 times. 1 one of the peoples of east Canaan and beyond the Jordan, dispossessed by the Israelite incursion from Egypt. Additional Information: Amorite = “a sayer”.
- Strong, J. (1996). The Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible (electronic ed.). Ontario: Woodside Bible Fellowship.
...which makes sense considering the verb אָמַר which means "say". The EDBN, however, has this...
- Amorite(s) (am’-o-rite) = Mountaineer. A talker. A slayer.
- Smith, S., & Cornwall, J. (1998). The Exhaustive Dictionary of Bible Names (15). North Brunswick, NJ: Bridge-Logos.
...and while its "talker" corresponds well enough with "sayer"...notice that it adds "slayer" as a meaning.
What I'm wondering is if an "L" was scribally (accidentally) inserted into "sayer" because of the unusual appearance of the word--"sayer" is a word that is rarely encountered. Usually, in English, one would use "speaker" as opposed to "sayer". It is so unusual, in fact, that the spell-checker keeps flagging it as misspelled as I'm typing this.
If this is a mistake, it would be similar to what I've seen on a few occasions with Gen. 49:9 & Num. 24:9 where the word "couch" (meaning "to lie as if relaxing upon a couch") is used to describe a lion. This word is often rendered as "crouch" by those who don't recognize the word as is, or perhaps just unconsciously fill-in the "R" they expect to be there. [Fwiw, I'm referring to the word as it is used in English, not the Hebrew.]
I realize this may not seem like a huge deal, but it is actually pretty significant from a prophetic perspective. If Logos could contact the publisher and see if this is legit or a mistake, that would be great. Also, if it is legit, where does the "slayer' meaning come from?
I appreciate any effort put into this. Thanks.
