Working while Indexing

Happy New Year all! (And for you liturgical folks Happy Feast of the Holy Name!)

I've read that the indexing process for Logos 4 can in some cases take days! (That seems amazing to me!) As I think about preparing for this, can I still do my work on the computer while the indexing takes place or will the indexing require total dedication of the computer? Many thanks for the help

You can still work on your computer, but how efficiently depends on your computer. A newer quad core, probably no problem, a newer dual core, slower but probably ok. Also of course the hard drives need to be fast. My dual core 1.8 ghz 4 gb computer is ok to work at while indexing, but it pegs the cpu quite a bit, so now and then I get a lag time, not horrible, doesn't crash, but lags. My home quad core stays below 50%, can't tell it's indexing.

As already noted, it depends on the speed of your "installation." (By installation, I mean more than the cpu chip, as L4 is hungry for cpu, disk, & video card. Check out several ongoing threads on "minimum" / "optimum" configuration for L4.)

That aside, since I've kept L3 anyway for other reasons, I just use L3 when L4 is busy.

It does depend on your specs, but it also depends on whether it is a full or supplemental indexing. Also, it is getting faster. When I got the new interlinears in SR2 it put me over a supplemental indexing into a full/merge indexing - that took 1.5 hours as opposed to 3 hrs last time I did one in mid-Dec.

Also, don't forget you can pause indexing (4 hours max at a time) and do some processor intensive work, then restart it (any time you want within the 4 hours) when you back off to something lighter, like reading the forums [:)].
