Tech questions: Is there a point where adding more RAM has diminishing returns?

I am looking for a new laptop and will be just doing mainly Logos, document creation and internet on it. I used to be a gamer, but finally saw the light. I was thinking of getting a simple machine with 8gb of RAM but see many that have 12 and 16. I'm just wondering if at some point with Logos does it just become redundant? I would like to opt for a SSD but don't want to fork over more than 3-400. If anyone has particular suggestions on a new one, I'm all ears. ty

I have 32gb of ddr3, and I never see logos using more than a few hundred mb. If you are only using the machine for Logos, then the SSD is a better place to invest your money. SSD saves hours on indexing your library.

IF you do go the SSD route, get the largest drive you can afford, or perhaps find a laptop which has a second bay for a solid state drive. With a second built in drive bay you can easily add an SSD that you can install Logos onto. You'd not need to get as big of a drive, and thus it might be a cheaper option.

I have 4tb of mechanical storage on my computer, but upgraded my windows installation drive to an 120gb ssd some time back. It didn't take long before I'd filled up the SSD and had to move logos back to the mechanical storage. I need to get a drive and dedicate it to Logos, or else get one of these and ghost the image onto the new drive. The put my old SSD in my laptop.

Yes, I believe there is a point where you get no return for additional ram. My desktop came with 12G. I found a tremendous deal on 24G of G Skill ram and bought it on a whim. I gained no improvement on the Windows experience index, Novabench benchmark, or increased speed in Logos startup or searches. I think one would have to have several resource hungry applications running simultaneously to take advantage of that much ram. I agree. 8G should be more than enough. I would suggest spending your cash on the best SSD you can swing.

8 GB of Ram should be more than enough for Logos and similar program. Investing on a fast and big SSD (prices are dropping)is where you will get the best return on investment.

If you buy this drive sure than you choose a laptop that takes regular 2.5 drives and not an ultrabook requiring MSata drives that have a different form factor or slim SSD that are 7mm.

I learned this the hard way when I first got into SSD.

Agreed. I have the 256 G 840 pro. It scores 7.8 of a possible 7.9 on windows index. If they get any faster , they will have to incorporate more headroom in the index.

My Logos5 is using 1.5g virtual and almost 1g private. I've also noticed that when my PC is getting sluggish, I re-start Logos to get it to unload accumulated memory. I have another app that also slowly eats up memory as well. I have 8g and typically have to restart around 60%.

But I agree with the above; the SSD route is the far better choice. I have my Logos and Libronix running on the SSD.
