Just got an e-mail that the Select Sermons, Homilies, and Treatises of St. Augustine (5 vols.) has gone over and will close next week. Appears that we have a good chance at $24, or lower. Please bid!
If I have the Philip Schaff version, why should I get these?
Correct me if Im wrong but I dont believe Schaff has the sermons.
The homilies for many, I believe, are present in the ECF. I say many because I can't determine for sure. Here is what always gets me on the multiple offering from different publishers. In this case, I'm not sure the content of Volume 2 is in the ECF. When I do a search of the 7 Augustine volumes in ECF for Titus I find them referenced in short sections in Volume 5 ... no homilies that I can see. Same for Philipians, Galations, etc. All of these references seem to be in treatises on a particular subject.
There is no help from the product page as all of the sample pages from all 5 volumes link to the same 7 pages from Sermon II on the Gospel of Matthew. [:^)]
I agree that this is extremely difficult for us loyal Logos customers. [:(] I wish there could be more clarity on these sets/volumes covering the church fathers but I see no improvement in product information regarding similarities and distinctions between sets.
I'm going to err on the side of caution and place an order. I may end up returning them after I see and compare the content.
Perhaps someone else or someone from Logos can provide some clarity.
For the current bid price these are likely a very good deal: if you are concerned that you might already have some of these by a different translator, then would suggest you bid anyway, wait until you get them, compare, then return these if you think they are duplicates, as suggested by Steve. At the CP price this is low risk... bid if you MIGHT want them....
We've made it to $24!
How about $20?
For Augustine, a resource I find valuable is Augustine Through the Ages: An Encyclopedia which includes a comprehensive list of known publications of Augustine works (where the Latin is found and the English translation). For the sermons, the book lists 396 total sermons (I know!) most of which are from the Patrologia Latina Series... many sermons numbered 365 and larger have doubtful authenticity.
The book does not list the NPNF series among those containing the translations of the sermons. Rather it indicates that volume 81 of the Fathers of the Church Series by the Catholic University of America has sermons 184 - 265 (82 total?). The description of the volume indicates it contains 79 sermons.
The titles of the Select Sermons volumes on CP show that they contain homilies 1-43 and 44-124 (with volume 2 seeming to indicate a different set of homilies 1-10 ?!)
It is worth noting that the CP volumes are part of a larger series called "A Library of Fathers of the Holy Catholic Church". Why isn't the whole series on CP? I don't know. Here is a link that shows the remaining volumes in this series. I noticed a claim by the translators of this series:
Of S. Augustine, there have been published his Homilies on S. John's Gospel and first Epistle, in two volumes; five volumes of Homilies on the Psalms; and two volumes containing all those of his Sermons which have been preserved upon detached parts of the New Testament.
Hope this helps.
This looks good. How about a few more bids?
