Android Cache and performance

A few different times I have noticed that my Nexus 7 is starting slow down. I have been able to fix this problem by cleaning my app cache using a program like App Cache Cleaner or similar. It has lots of free disk space, so that is not a problem. The Verbum app always runs quickly.

Deleting the app cache deletes the book icons in the Verbum app, however, which is sort of irritating.

As this has happened a few times now (i.e. I delete the cache and the whole Android system speeds up again), I wonder if there isn't a relationship between the book icons and the slow system performance, and if the book icons couldn't be stored elsewhere.
