Sermon Conceptualization and Development

A local church is without a pastor and I'm filling in with preaching duties until they can find someone. I had a brief stint in seminary, but it was focused upon biblical languages, and I really wasn't anticipating preaching at that time. Would appreciate anyone sharing their sermon crafting process and thoughts: inspiration, development, refinement, etc. Does the process for you start out as a germ of an idea that is developed into a sketchy outline and then fleshed out, or are there other ways of approaching the process? I suspect the very idea will make some recoil in horror, but is there any homiletical study that takes a formalist approach by analyzing sermons for typical patterns and structures? Any book recommendations would also be welcome. Thank you.

Thankful for Logos visual filter highlighting that can highlight range of Greek verbal expression in Greek, English, and Spanish resources with interlinear tagging; wiki has => http://wiki.logos.com/Extended_Tips_for_Highlighting_and_Visual_Filters#Examples_of_visual_filters

Hi Brent,
I cannot more highly commend Bryan Chapell's book: Christ-Centered Preaching. It sits on solid ground but also gives you very helpful, practical insights into some of the nitty-gritty details of preaching (e.g. what you should wear). He has a followup book: Christ-Centered Sermons, but I haven't gone through it at all. His class is on iTunesU if you have time and want to hear him teach, but I'm guessing you'll need to quickly digest a book.
My only other word to you is to say what God says. Whatever approach you take to preaching, you are opening God's Word before the church, and you'll do well if you stay true to the Scriptures.

Brent,
David Murray's book How Sermons Work (not available in Logos yet) is written precisely for your situation. It's a short book that walks a lay person through the crafting of a sermon in a small amount of time.
The trailer is well worth watching: http://headhearthand.org/blog/2011/10/18/how-sermons-work-video/
Hope that helps!

Murray also has two videos on www.sermonaudio.com
They are titled: Sermon prep for busy pastors 1 and 2I enjoyed them though I don't follow his sermon planning procedure.

Brent, Since you are filling in temporarily and don't need a huge outlay of money and time I would suggest that you look at the Preparing Sermons webinar series at Learn Logos.com. http://www.learnlogos.com/category_s/1818.htm At a minimum I would buy Session 4 on outlining since it is the back bone of every expository sermon. For 5 bucks and two hours of your time, you would get the most bang for your buck. I would maybe pick up the session 9 one on application if you want more. Expository sermons are a close relative to inductive bible study.

You might want to look into "The I-Beam of Message Building" by Morris Proctor, who teaches the Camp Logos seminars. He's a very good trainer and communicator.
http://www.mpseminars.com/i-beam/
The link on that page for how to buy the DVD through the Logos website is broken, but you can buy it through MP Seminars:
http://www.mpseminars.com/index.php/shop/i-beam-products/i-beam-of-message-building-dvd/
Or get the training manual for much less:
http://www.mpseminars.com/index.php/shop/i-beam-products/i-beam-manual/
But I'm guessing that some of the suggestions others have made above will be better for your budget.

I think the best communicator is Andy Stanley, and he has written the best book on the topic.
Howard Hendricks had a book "teaching to change lives." Stanley has expanded on the theme.
