Rule for One Volume Bible Commentaries?

Is there a rule to make a collection of "One volume Bible commentaries"? or do I have to drag them one by one? I think I have about 20 one volume commentaries and it would be nice to have them in a collection. By one volume I mean one volume that includes the entire Bible or just OT or NT. I wouldn't mind including Study Bible Notes in this collection.

Those collections tend to 'cheat', by mostly listing the names of one-volume commentaries. They're probably quite dated now. In my library it finds literally hundreds of false positives

Personally, I use:

type:commentary AND ((subject:”Bible—Commentaries” ANDNOT subject:”Bible—Commentaries—Collected works”) OR mytag:one-volume OR (subject:”Bible O.T.--Commentaries” AND subject:”Bible .N.T.--Commentaries”))

Without tags it only finds 24 out of 34 one-volume commentaries in my library. Tagging's not consistent enough for a fully dynamic collection unfortunately.

I agree with Mark. I tag all of my one volume commentaries and then base my collection on that tag.

Okay - I'll add my idea to the mix to see if it adds anything;

(Subject:Bible-Commenta* ANDNOT (Subject:N.T. OR Subject:O.T. OR Lesson))
OR (type:Notes ANDNOT (Subject:N.T. OR Subject:O.T. OR Lesson))

This of course does not include one volume commentaries that cover only the NT or OT - but I would prefer to exclude these from my list of one-volume commentaries.

Hey DAL, just wondering why you want a collection of "one volume commentaries" versus a multi volume?

I want to put a custom guide together with one volume commentaries for devotional purposes. To sort of get a bird's eye view of the text without having to read all the technical jargon of all the other top commentaries I have (e.g. WBC, NIGTC, PNTC etc.).

Also to use it for short lessons on short radio spots.

Anyway, I will go ahead and try Mark's rule and see if I can get this guide put together so I can start using it in the morning before going to work.

Thanks Mark and others! The rule worked, but there were still some titles that didn't show up, so I had to add them manually. 67 resources for my custom passage guide for devos. Most one volume commentaries and Bible notes along with some Bible handbooks that were listed as commentaries.

The additions were quite a few, but from what I remember: The Bible Knowledge Commentary, A.T. Robertson Word Pictures, Marvin Vincent's Word Studies, William Barclay's one volume NT commentary (Spanish), and the Spanish version of the ones I mentioned. IVP OT and NT Background commentaries, the Bible Exposition Commentary, The Teacher's Bible Commentary. Also study Bibles: Andrews Study Bible, MacArthur Study Bible (English and Spanish), ESV Study Bible, New Bible Commentary in Spanish, Nelson's New Illustrated Bible Commentary (Spanish), Reformed Study Bible, NASB Study Bible (Spanish), Faithlife Study Bible, and a few other Study Bibles in Spanish. I even left Calvin Commentaries since they are listed in one volume.

Is this what you wanted?

So something like:

Well, I'm not that savvy with "Rules" so I just opened up my library window and from there I found what I wanted by type or title and then just drag and drop LOL...I know, more work. I should get to learning more about "Rules." With the one Calvin volume I ended up with 68 resources. What I don't get is why Calvin shows up as one orange resource when you include it in the collection, but it shows as a bunch of brown resources when you open up the library window [:^)]

Ps. Now if there was a way to prioritize those without messing up the current prioritized list I have, that would be awesome, but for now, I'm content to have my custom one volume notes and commentaries guide for short meditation purposes.

Thanks for sharing! I still find all these very "manual" collections, plus you use the mytag, but your screenshot doesn't show this column which might help.

Personally, I plan to revisit my own one-volume rule these days and set a tag to all of them (hoping communityrating helps me out a bit)

I found it easier to tag one volume commentaries identified by the rule:-

(type:commentary AND subject:Bible—Commentaries) OR (type:notes AND subject:(Bible—Commentaries, Bible-Handbooks, Bible-Study))

It doesn't miss any one-volume commentaries in my library but includes a couple of exceptions. As I don't rate many so-called commenteries I only tagged about half of them!

It didn't work for me. It added Thru the Bible 60 volumes, WBC 59 volumes and others. The other one plus manual additions made it work so I'll keep this one for now. Thanks, though.

Try {Series None}, {MyTag None}. Their counterpart is {Series Any}, {MyTag Any} --> case matters
