What am I doing wrong on default note stuff?

Should the default be limited to the note file? I have two note files open at the same time. I want notes for one to be tagged by a sticky note, from the other by a star, one to have highlights, the other not. How do I set the note default format for a particular note file?

I think it would be really helpful if you could have per notes-document default notes indicators. At the moment, I believe, it is defaulted application-wide

Edit: Can you expand on this?

As you know creating a note by selection results in a highlight and I'm not aware of any way of changing that. Is that what you are looking for?
