Is there a way to display the scripture reference for a song on the first slide only?
Putting it in the credits makes it so small that it is illegible.

Not sure exactly what you mean by "scripture reference for a song"
But what you could do is to create a title slide (check "Show title on title slide") when editing the slide and then include the reference in the title.

That's a solution but, I was thinking a separate field with independent properties (font size) that I could put a reference (i.e., Psalm 148) below the title and have that only appear on the slide with the title.
Another solution could be setting 'Show title on X slide' to first lyric (Do this by clicking the blue text and selecting 'first lyric' from the drop down menu). This is the closest thing I can think of to what you are trying to accomplish. At this point there is no way to create a custom text box that only appears on one slide for a multi-slide service item.
