When not to Logos

I've long since decided to plant my library seed dollars in Logos. Save for a ridiculously good print book price or freebie anywhere.

But I am seeing some tempting deals of non-core books in eBook form elsewhere. Notice I am specific that they are non-core.

Maybe I should just whittle down my wish list on Logos first. Any thoughts on this?

If there is a book you really want to read immediately, and it isn't in Logos and you don't see it coming any time soon, you certainly shouldn't feel bad for getting it elsewhere. Buy what you want.

My personal thoughts is that, if it is free or almost free I don't mind getting e-books from other sources but pretty much all of my spending dollars goes to Logos. Personally I'd be disappointed if I got a resource that was at a good price with another company which later became available in Logos and would have a hard time justifying getting the same resource again. Personally I am choosing to wait for it to become available through Logos and hopefully at a good price.

Absent research-y stuff (dictionaries, lexicons, original languages, etc), I shop around. Kindle, used, whatever. We don't buy gasoline at 1 station; we don't shop for clothes at 1 store. And we certainly don't buy groceries from 1 store. And Logos isn't a church (we do go to 1 church).

Now the problem with that approach is that I don't get on Logos for weeks at a time, since I typically try to read cover to cover, and may not need Logos research/search. And quite frankly, Logos tends to be years behind, with its pre-pub system. And did I mention NA28 apparatus?

The other issue I'm getting a little tired of, is their avoidance of anything that speaks to hard data. They tippy-toe with archaeology, and a little Exodus, but by and large, if you want hard data, Logos isn't it. And before someone starts rationalizing, remember that most of the hard data in Logos was around a century ago. Need some progress.

When it becomes available in Logos BUY IT. It was "free or almost free" elsewhere when you got it so you are not out much $$$. It will be that much more useful in Logos as you all ready know it [elsewhere].

If you need it, and it is within your budget - get it. Who knows when it will be available in Logos

Don't try to figure this out. Remember, George thinks in Hebrew! [;)] Anyway, you'd need a Reverse Interlinear and George doesn't do interlinear!

The one thing I love the most now is having Logos as central. I don't have any excuse not to begin there. I probably need to make some reference PB for external eBooks or bound volumes.

I shouldn't complain about the abundance of available resources. It's just getting to be a bit overwhelming. Even within Logos at times.

There are two types of books I really like to have in Logos:

Reference Works - commentaries, lexicons, encyclopedias, etc - because the take up so much space, I only want to read one section of them at a time, and Logos can open them to the correct page immediately.
Counseling/Christian Living/Pastoral Care - Since I started using these for sermon prep I find it extremely useful to have in Logos.

Anything else, especially if it's something I'm going to read cover-to-cover (where I prefer dead tree books), I'm fine not having in Logos.
