Is it just my copy / computer or is anyone else having problems with Jastrow? I can't seem to navigate except by using the spacebar. I can't even enter a word in the search box.
It's a bit squirrelly. When you say 'search box' are you referring to 'Find' box? If so, that works on mine. If you meant the reference box, that works on mine too. Or are you in the search tool?
However for whatever reason, Jastrow doesn't work in the CitedBy tool. HALOT-A does, but not Jastrow. I was hoping I'd get some interesting pointers from OT Bible references in Jastrow > Targum/Talmud. But not to be (for me).
It's immensely interesting reading though; I suppose a space bar might be a little limiting!
EDIT: Oopsie-daisy ... I had ArabicLexicons selected instead of AramaicLexicons. Gee ... they're so similar. Now, Jastrow is REALLY delivering. Nice.
EDIT2: For anyone that has Jastrow, the CitedBy tool picks up the Targum references too (thus if you're in Isa 33.6, and Jastrow speaks to Targum Isaiah, CitedBy will catch it).
EDIT3: I'm liking the Jastrow CitedBy so much, now, that I gave it its own CitedBy apart from the Mishnah/Talmud. The Targums quite often have a clue concerning arguments over words.
There must have been some temporary glitch since I can now enter a word to locate in the—whatever you call it. I have attempted to prioritize Jastrow above some other things such as TWOT, but it doesn't show up in the right-click menu. In the end it didn't really matter. I was attempting to see if he had anything on עֲזָאזֵל, but what he has is unrelated to its occurrence in Leviticus.
Yes, it took me awhile to figure out lexicons that had both hebrew and aramaic. Here's my current prioritization on aramaic:
..
I put Glosses and Targum high, just to get a flag that the word was in Qumran and/or Targums. TWOT gets picked now by both Hebrew and Aramaic top-5's.
I suspect that although the information page for Jastrow lists both Aramaic and Hebrew headword indices, only Aramaic is recognized. E.g., in Lev 16.10 it has יָֽעֳמַד־חַ֛י לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה, and the word חַ֛י does appear in Jastrow in the same sense as in HALOT, Jastrow is not given as an option—possibly because a Hebrew passage is not specifically cited in the Jastrow entry.
