Hymns and Scripture

I am looking for a book, database, search term, etc., that will allow me to enter the name of a hymn and find scriptures passages (not individual verses) that might be used along with that hymn.

I am trying to put together a sermon series on some of the great hymns of faith focusing on their, their author's, and their composer's history. I have sources that give me this information, but I am finding it more difficult to find scriptures which parallel a given hymn.

Here's how I solved that problem, Floyd: I created a new highlighting palette for the purpose, then read through scripture in its entirety, highlighting passages and verses that were either quoted in music, or had allusions to them in music.

As you might guess, the primary limiting factor was my own lack of exposure to various diverse kinds of sacred music. I'm pretty solid on the last couple hundred years of western hymns, and do OK with current so-called CCM. I'm functional with much of the western classical sacred music of the last four hundred years or so, but no expert. I'm very weak on all forms of eastern music and other non-western genres.

But my purpose was to find music to which I could relate, so not knowing everything wasn't a problem for me.

Back to your purpose: I have not searched Logos for any hymn-history type books, but if they have some, that'd be the place to start. In addition, if you have access to any traditional hymnals in Logos, many denominations put this kind of information with individual hymns, or at least put a scripture index in their hymnals. These would also be good references. I am not from a liturgical background, and know little about some of the liturgies out there, but I know some of these resources are available in Logos, and a dig through them would also probably be fruitful.

Finally, there are others in the forums much more versed (pun intended) in this than I, so you'll likely get better answers as the thread progresses.

I sometimes use Hymns and Scripture Selection Guide (https://www.logos.com/product/1495/hymn-and-scripture-selection-guide) as a starting point. It tends to be verse oriented, but like I said, a good starting point.

I believe many have direct Scripture references, and some have implied Scripture references. But this is a good place to start, as you could start by searching these resources for a hymn name, and then see a Scripture reference.

I use them that way too. I avoided answering your question until that method came to mind.

It's not "your bad," it's just the advantage of having someone else think about the same issue. Good on ya, for asking. Remember Red Green's words: "I'm pullin' for ya; we're all in this together."
