I'm thinking of buying the Manual of Mythology. Is there a more recent "type" of book that deals with this or is that it?
mm.
Yes, more recent primarily from an archaeology standpoint (especially the middle east). Plus you'd want to narrow down what type of myth book you're seeking ... straight similarities/differences on myths, theories about development, and of course the possible interplay with the accounts found in both the OT and NT (yes, the NT).
I'd make sure you get MJ's 2-cents; she also has the other dimension that is often displayed in culture/linguistics.
Thanks. I'll wait for MJ to reply. I'm basically looking for an overview of as many cultures as possible. However any suggestion within the Logos book family is preferred. I don't mind Kindle, but reading a Kindle book on one screen and Logos of the other is a pain.
Milkman have you tried this: https://www.logos.com/products/search?q=myth
I have not tried it. From what I just looked at, there are several books that interest me.
thanks.
The Oxford Companion to World Mythology by David Leeming is the best source I know in a dictionary type format. Most of the older works - say pre-1950 - worked with limited data that created some very distinct biases.
For a textbook style anthology with introductions etc. I'd recommend World Mythology: An Anthology of Great Myths and Epics by Donna Rosenberg assuming you don't want a long series.
In Logos A Dictionary Of Biblical Tradition In English Literature by David L. Jeffrey has a surprising amount of information due in part to David Fowler's participation. Not what you're really looking for but something to keep in mind.
