adjust it with the slider in the resource menu (click on icon)

No matter where you move the slider the small text does not change in size.

Mac users can better advise you as this does work in Windows. What version of Mac OS?

I don't use this feature often. I can confirm that the size slider has no effect on the actual word list items. I am also on Mavericks. See screen shot:
