"Featuring the original Syriac text and Lewis Smith’s English translation, this unique volume details the lives of Eugenia, Mary, Euphrosyne, Onesima, Drusis, Barbara, Sophia, and more—including stories of conversions, persecution, and in some cases, martyrdom. This text also includes helpful appendices, notes, and an index of proper names."

What arrived was

John the Stylite. Select Narratives of Holy Women. Translated by Agnes Smith Lewis. Vol. X. Studia Sinaitica. London: C. J. Clay and Sons; Cambridge University Press Warehouse, 1900.

So what is not as advertized?

  • the translator is Agnes Smith Lewis not Lewis Smith
  • the resource is the second volume of a two volume set ... sold as a single volume without the first
  • the missing volume is the Syriac text and probably the appendices

And to think, I haven't tried using it yet to see if it passes QA.

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."
