Trying out Logos 5
Hi all! I'm a brand new user to Logos and wanted to try out the software before I decided to invest in a base package. Are there any free bibles that are available to play with to help me get familiarized with the software?

Welcome to the forums Tony. Logos offers a 30 day money back guarantee. Other than that here are a list of free resources that you can download. It should be pointed out however, that the more resources and the more diverse your resources, the better the software works.

Thank you for the quick reply, Lynden! That is great to know about the 30 day money back guarantee. Part of my hesitancy is my very small budget. As a college student (non-seminary), I was just hoping to spice up my personal bible study. It sure looks like a great product, and I'm hoping, Lord willing, it may be something I can add to my library. Unfortunately, finances are the issue at this point, even just settling for the "Starter" package, so for now I will be getting what I can from the wonderful link you provided and start getting familiar with the software. If it looks like something that will work for me, I will hopefully be getting on board!

Tony you might get a better taste of what Logos has to offer downloading the mobile APP if have an iOS device or an android device. Logos mobile offers over 70 free resources so you can get a good feel for it. If you cannot afford a starter package you can always get a few resources...and use Logos 5 you just won;t have the datasets which make Logos more useful.

Thanks, Dan! I downloaded the mobile app and am having fun getting used to it! I'm hoping that I can take advantage of the features it offers on desktop eventually too! Thanks for the pointers!

You are not suppose to do this (I know and I am bad, but it is the cheapest way to allow you to have an inexpensive collection and I am not offering a link).... but if you go to a forest retailer and search for the following CD you can get this for under $20... You will be able to have the resources unlocked by calling Logos with the enclosed serial number.

And that's phenomenal news about the Logos 5 software. I have the "free version" now - just not a base package. That will work even without a base package if I'm understanding correctly, yes? You all have been much too helpful!!

Tony, there's two Logosian tribes. The packagers and the non-packagers. I'm of the latter.
Us non-packagers view the packagers as non-discriminating.
But over the long run, packages can indeed save money with a small budget spread out over time.

Denise, I've never quite heard Logos users "packaged" that way before. [;)]

One thing to also remember is once you decide which starter package is going to be best for you
Verbum Basic+ (Catholic starter)
Starter (general evangelical)
SDA Starter (Seventh Day Adventist)
Anglican Starter (Anglican / Episcopalian )
Reformed Starter
Lutheran Starter
All these packages cost about the same except Verbum which is $25 dollars cheaper and if you wish to take advantage of Logos payment plan it will run you Under $30 a month which is fairly affordable for most budgets (Includes a $5 a month accounting fee).

Denise, thanks for the information! That makes much more sense. When I was first researching Logos, I was under the impression that you had to purchase a base package to even use the software. I was pleasantly surprised when I found the free download! I can certainly see how a package would be beneficial in the long run. I think I am most interested in the datasets - I'm longing for a solid, easily navigable, comprehensive database of information pertaining to biblical events, places, people, maps, and timelines. I do not know Greek or Hebrew (though want to learn), so the Hebrew/Greek versions of the Testaments is of little value to me as of right now (though hopefully in the future!). Commentaries are not my prime concern at this point, though I wouldn't be opposed to grabbing one or two. I know that many are widely available online for free though.
The resources that caught my eye the most was the exhaustive word search (including phrase search) and, again, the datasets. As such, does that sound like I would be best off with being a "non-packager", picking up a dataset and maybe a few other resources for a little over a hundred dollars?

Hello Tony, I too was a theology student undergrad- then a pastor and now again seminary student. I purchased under the payment plan (NO INTEREST!), yes that is right. No interest was very nice to me. I being a mac user looked at Bible Works and Accordance. Well BW did not have a mac version then, now they have an emulator via wine simulator but wine is basically a band aid.
Accordance is made for mac and is really fast and that is no joke, really really fast! However, Logos 5 is getting there, and I have enjoyed reaping the benefits of choosing logos and staying with them because from version 4 to 5, it has come a long long way.
I use Logos daily and for seminary there isn't really a need for me to visit the library, I have everything I need here. My wife likes it too because every time we move we don't have to move all those books. I am a package user but have added to my package separately. I have to admit, at the seminary, Logos is all the buzz here.
Why? Well students here recognize logos to be one stop shop. History, check. Preaching, check. Bible study, check. Maps, check. Original languages, check (very indepth), and on and on! Logos does far more than the competitors. I am not knocking them because they are also equipping saints to work in the Lord's vineyard. However, I think Logos equips with far more. Logos used to have the reputation of being strictly an ereader software, at least that is what professors thought of it. Now, it is known for that but also for all the original language in depth Biblical research capabilities, far too many to describe here. I purchased a "not official" logos training video set and could not believe everything this software is capable of.
I too have the Logos iPhone app, and I have the accordance app. I can highlight the Logos books or Bibles and there they are in my phone quickly highlighted. Accordance doesn't seem to do this for me. Logos app is integrated with Siri so I can do voice to text. So when I work out, I can listen to a book so I can report on it later or while I am driving.
The denominational packages are also a plus too if that interests you. I have not taken advantage of them but again, I am package user who adds on as I see fit. I guess Denise would call me a third tribe. A packager who adds as I see fit. Oh, and the academic discount is really outstanding. At the moment I believe Logos to be the leader in Bible software technology. It's not perfect but neither is Accordance or Bible works, but it does far more than the other two, not to mention the free books, faithlife, Vyrso, and proclaim software. I see Logos as a tool for my Phd future and ministry for years to come. I'll stop here, as you can see, I could go on about this.

Accordance is nice and starter is only $50, you can check out their mobile app as well... but Rev. is right you have to manually transfer highlights via drop box.

Rev. 14:6 - thank you so much for this wonderful bit of encouraging advice! Like you said, the student discount really is phenomenal. I feel like it is quite the steal, and the Bronze package looks to do all I want and much much more! Again, I'm not seminary, nor theology student undergrad, but just a college student who loves the Word and wants to dig in it deeper! It looks like Logos might be the perfect software - your review is certainly glowing! I love the idea of having everything at my fingertips in electronic form. Though I am quite old fashioned and love my hard-backed books and bibles, having it all available online is economic and efficient. I feel like this could be a solid investment for the future - wherever the Lord happens to lead me (formal ministry or otherwise)! As you said, I will certainly give it over in prayer. Knowing that the payment plans work so well is definitely a bonus. It's a shame that the Bronze Package doesn't come with the "Clause Search" - a feature I was particularly looking forward to. I will do some more research and prayer but the more I look at Logos, the more intrigued I get - especially after reviews like yours! Thanks again!
