Will buying a verbum package turn my logos app into verbum?

Hi,

I wanted to buy summa theologica and noticed I can get it included in verbum basic+ for almost the same price because of dynamic pricing. The advantage would be all the extra books bundled with it. I'm holding back because I'm worried it will turn my logos app into verbum and all the priorities, defaults etc will change?

Has anyone bought verbum but continued as logos user and can advise me?

No, it won't change your software from Logos to Verbum, it will just download additional resources. As a legitimate buyer of a Verbum package you may be then entitled to use the command "Set Verbum to Yes" (which works in the opposite direction with "Set Verbum to No"), but it won't force you into a Verbum user.

The situation is different for users who buy Verbum as their very first Logos package, or do a fresh install from a Verbum installer.

You have to differentiate a) Verbum the dedicated installation from b) Logos running Verbum mode.

a) the location of installation files are different (Folder Verbum instead of Logos4/Logos/whatever) and since it is its own software there's the chance of unique bugs. It uses the Verbum Logo for the taskbar icon etc. But the real differences seem to be very small. Other than that, Verbum runs constantly in Verbum mode and AFAIK can't be switched over to Logos mode.

b) In Verbum mode,

the home page will be different:

it will display the Verbum logo instead of the Logos logo in the topleft corner of the home page ribbon.
The selection of items for the ribbon and the homepage may differ (e.g. for some time, the Academic Blog couldn't be selected for Verbum - Logos rectified that, but I seem to remember there are some others). Per default, Verbum will show the day's saints in the ribbon, which is - I think - an optional selection in Logos. Verbum can show the Verbum blog which for some time provided much deeper technical usage tips than the Logos blog.

some guides in Verbum will have predefined collections geared to the interests of Roman Catholic users (like CCC & Church Fathers) which don't show in Logos.

That's top of my head and may miss some things. To the best of my knowledge, Logos is working on supporting lectionaries (liturgical dates etc) and a more-than-66-books canon for Verbum, but it seems they aren't there yet.

I was going to say something But NB.Mick beet me to it and gave a better answer. Just note that a dual install of Logos 5 and Verbum takes up twice as much disk space as all resources are duplicated. That is there is a copy of each in each install. Enjoy.

At this time they are small. There are plans to add features to Verbum that might not be added to Logos.

You are right in that you can do that. But any Logos user can do that to see the difference, Verbum like Logos is a free engine. Now datasets are not free, but there is only one specific Verbum dataset i can think of.

You are right in that you can do that. But any Logos user can do that to see the difference,

I haven't bought any Verbum products and the command "set verbum to yes" doesn't seem to be recognised in my Logos package?

It was my understanding anyone could do this... I thought I did it before I had a verbum package, but maybe you do need one now.

In addition to the things mentioned here by others I would also suggest a look at the Verbum Features Page. It has a nice summary of the functionality.

The most important features to me in Verbum are:

- Liturgical Layout

- Catholic Topical Index

- Saints Database

I went ahead and bought it - I really wanted a logos copy of Aquinas' Summa Theologica to do some hunting through links to the church fathers. My pdf file was getting annoying. As it turns out it was cheaper to get this base package for me than to buy it separately and I got a lot of other stuff thrown in!

I have it on the authority of another forum member, that buying a verbum resource qualifies you for additional mailing lists. ... Both internet and USPS. I believe she received a genuine imitation Ivory and ruby rosary, and a stick on, glow in the dark statue of Mary for the dashboard of her car. [:)]
