Richard -
When I read Abram's post:
It made me think: What do you mean by "it takes 20-30 minutes"? I have a 4 year old MacBook Pro and a relatively slow DSL connection. When Logos needs to download a new engine, it can take 5-15 minutes. I am not inconvenienced in any way during this time (other than netflix running slow [:P]). I can use the app just fine during the download. Once the download has occurred, I have the option of restarting at my convenience. Once I restart Logos, I am unable to use the app for a few minutes, but I am then able to do most things right away (If resources were updated, searches will not be fully accurate for the resources being indexed). Overall, I have been inconvenienced for only about 5 minutes. Is this not your experience? What do you mean by 20-30 minutes for a download to install? Are you having computer problems? What are your specs? [Is this a Logos for PC issue?]Abram K-J said:That is one short eternity!

Abram,
You are correct and I stand corrected! Thank you.
I was venting frustration that everytime I try to use my Logo Bible Software I have to download and install some upgrade or addition.
I simply want to study the Bible and prepare to teach God's people. I don't want a process that continually wants me to upgrade something and takes so long to upgrade.
I think Logos has been overwhelmed in self-importance and they have forgotten the simplicity of the "average" pastor trying to lead God's people.

Richard - Your comments aren't fair. You are placing a value judgment on the motives of the company (and more importantly its employees!). Logos continues to improve the software to HELP the "average" pastor.

Richard,
What others are saying: turn off automatic updates, and run them at a time when its OK if its busy for a while and needs to index. So, do it at the end of a night and leave it running as you go to bed or something. Keep in control and let the tool work for you. And maybe avoid updates until you complete your current surmon prep etc.
For almost any software where there is such an option, I change it from automatic to manual or auto-check-but-ask regarding updates. Then I do the updates when I want, and don't lose use of it when I have sometime I want to complete or have a deadline to work to.
Mostly I always apply Windows patches the moment they are released, but if I have something to complete, I have options. If I fear an online attack until I apply the patch, I have the option of working offline if I want, until I complete whatever critical task I need to complete.
I think if you are more fair, you will see that the software and the company is quite happy for you to read and study your Bible. Besides - its just a tool - use it as you do any other tools or items you own. Let it work for you and whatever needs you have.
Best Regards,
Jim

Hi Richard, from my humble opinion I think your title should be changed. I don't think it is right to make assumptions based on software updates that "
Logos Bible Software does NOT want you to study the Bible". Logos team works very hard to reduce bugs, improve Bible software, and add additional feature which would improve our Bible study. I do understand that we are all different and use different functions of this software and your list of desired features will be different from mine. Saying that, I think it is foolish to warn people to flee from this software because Logos team puts a lot of effort to make this software better. Other people already told you that you can simply disable auto updates.

This is false statement. Current advertisement on the main page is The Bible Speaks Today NT, good luck to find it free legally

Potentially true since Logos search can find many relevant rabbit trails to pursue.

I see this appears to be your first post on the forums. Welcome to the forums. This is where you can come for practical advice from other users before you get frustrated. One thing that I have learned on the forums is that there is no average pastor or lay user ... what is considered average varies widely between denominations, nationalities, congregation sizes, education/financial standing of the congregation ... Because Logos tries to serve all of us, one person's unwanted frill is another's essential functionality. So welcome to the forums - I hope we see more of you before things get to the venting level.

I have read through the different responses to my original post and I ask your forgiveness.
I was wrong to make assumptions about the motives and efforts of the Logos team.
Several of your responses contain very helpful hints and I will try them. I realize the problem is how I'm using Logos, not the software nor the team behind the software.
I probably need to keep Logos running all the time, instead of shutting it down when I walk away.
Thank you for your kindness and correction.

If you want to feel sorry for someone feel sorry for the people who are trying to update from a location that blocks Logos and then try using a VPN to solve that problem only to get kicked off every few minutes. Pray that their faith, and patience fail not.
This is a great time to vent. Here goes. Sometimes Logos is slow and updates this and that. Every time I buy something--which is often, and every time I get a freebie--which is often--Logos updates again! Every time Logos improves my software it updates yet again! Good grief! Even leaves a spare icon on my immaculately clean desktop which I have to delete. Then there is airport security, and cars that cut you off on the freeway. Good grief! Flee them all! But I have to fly and actually like it. And I am thankful for roads and cars and love to drive.
You know, actually, I think Logos is among the least of my problems and I LOVE it!
Ahhhh. Felt good to say all that.

Welcome to the forums. I think we all (or most) have experienced in some form or another, frustration using Logos. But it is a wonderful program, and is helpful in many ways. Forum users are of all shape and variety, but you will get good advice here that will help you enjoy the program and get the most out of it.
I do not keep logos running all day, and you do not need to. Just find how to turn off automatic updates. Then, when updates come, you will be notified and can decide when you want to run those updates. If you need help finding how to turn off the automatic updates, just ask again.

Perhaps you missed Wild Eagle's suggestion here. Did you realize that you can edit your posts including titles if you wish? Just click on the right hand side of your post and click "edit".
I hope that you will return often to increase your learning about how Logos can enhance your Bible study to new levels. There is so much to learn. I view the forums as a training tool and a tool to share what I have learned with others.

I remember so fondly buying Logos books and clicking on the 'old versions' link (Libronix), knowing I'd be able to read the book without the Logos headaches ... updates, indexing, updates, indexing, .... Then re-start to get the internet turned off. Or re-start to load a book. Lordy. Then re-load the big layout yet again (hoping Logos didn't mess it up again).
I think of it similar to starting a car. Libronix starts right up. Logos, you twist the key, wait ... twist the key, wait. Finally it revs but runs rough. By that time, you've alt-tab'd back to your speedy Bible software.
Similarly on my Kindle, I open the cover and I'm reading. I open the Logos app and I'm staring at the library. Click on my book yet one more time. All my readers 'get it' except Logos.
To say Logos 'cares' is a bit of a stretch. Logos doesn't 'do' easy.

To change the title, click "more" on the right hand side and then click edit. You have a certain number of hours wherein you can change it on your own. After that Logos can change, lock, or delete the thread on your request and should they agree to.
Υou may want to run a memory test program. Seems to me that could be an issue with one of the memory addresses that are not often used unless you are using a demanding program. Windows has a utility for that, use the method for running it manually.

If the Windows Memory Diagnostics tool doesn't run automatically, you can run it manually.

If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

There is a window of time during which you can change it. After that one has to request a change. I'll ask for a small change for you.

What MJ said is right. There is a window of time to be able to do this but it still can be changed if you wish. You just have to request it.
Here is how you change your posts in the future if needed.
- Choose "More" in the upper right corner
- Choose "Edit" in the list
- Make changes
- Re-post

Richard,
Glad to have you as part of the Logos forums, and I hope you stay around and post for a long time. I have often vented, only to apologize later, and God and my friends have been gracious to me.
Most of us have a love / hate relationship with any software that we use. I know I do.
However, I think you will come to really love Logos Bible Software, and you will find they are a more than fair company to deal with. They are downright nice in my opinion. I am just a customer of Logos, but I have been a Logos customer for about 20 years - almost from their get go. I have never been mistreated by them.
Of course, they make a profit, but they offer real value and a fair deal. And they gladly, without questioning you, will give back your money on any purchase within 30 days. Can't be more fair than that.
Hope Logos is a blessing to your study of God's Word.
