Is it getting faster?

Greetings all! I've been using Logos for a week now, and although it was very sluggish at the beginning, it appears to be getting faster and faster. I was wondering if it was just my imagination.

I'd also like to ask if it is possible to "upgrade" or "grade over" from Bible Study to Original Languages. I realized how much I missed having Greek and Hebrew text available, but I don't necessarily need all the pastoral books in Scholars.

Seriously, I think at the beginning you were probably still waiting for it to complete its indexing, which can take several hours, and sometimes might have to partially start over when you exit Logos and restart if there happened to be a new update from the server.

Yes, it is possible to upgrade to a different base package. If you go to the Logos website and click on "Upgrade Now" it will show you an "upgrade calculator" that will take into account the base package you already have, and any additional books you might have bought separately, and show you what it will cost for you to upgrade to any of the other packages.

If it's only your imagination then other users are sharing in a group delusion [:)] Anecdotal reports and sample searches seem to indicate Logos is slowing getting optimized.

Well, there are some resources that Bible Study has which Original Languages doesn't have, so that's probably why there is no clear upgrade path to OL. But you ought to be able to buy the rest of what's in OL and not have to pay again for all the resources in it that you've already got in BS. Sounds like you'll need to call Customer Service when they are open (Mon-Fri 6AM-5PM Pacific Time). They are always extremely helpful on the phone and can sometimes offer you better deals than what you'd get by ordering online anyway. I'm sure they won't prevent you from buying all the things you want from OL that aren't already in your base package. But what you'll probably end up with will still be BS as your base package and then the additional items as extras. Anyway, Customer Service will give you a better price for a bundle of all those extras if you order it through them than if you ordered them all individually through the website.

I think it's a combination of two things. The indexing finishes and you learn (perhaps unconciously) not to do things that make it even more sluggish. I can assure you it is just as sluggish as always.

I often (try to) use it across a Remote Desktop Connection, which also lets me see how painfully inefficient Logos 4 is in drawing the screen. For example, there is no text on the screen in reality. It's all bitmapped graphics. And when it scrolls a block of "text", the entire pane gets repainted from scratch rather than actual scrolling happen. The result is that an hour of reading results in over 50MB of data moving over the network where as in Logos 3 I'd see more than an order of magnitude less data transferred.

Some things that help are to remove the "Follow" link from Guides and Explorer. I forgot I had an explorer open the other day and in a Bible decided to go to Luke 1 by just typeing in Luke. Explorer than tried to "explore" the entire book of Luke, which basically resulted in Logos 4 consuming 95% of the CPU time for a very long time till I finally responded to enough clicks to close the Explorer pane. I also avoid Word-by-word reports in Guides. Even with no words automatically expanded, having that report in a Guide on a largish passage can bring Logos 4 to it's knees (even after it has finished generating the report).

Eek! Is that really happening? That is poor design. It should only need to repaint the portion that scrolls into view, as all the rest can just be block transfered as a bitmap. I used to work in development on Word at Microsoft, and this is common knowledge in any screen rendering software. In fact, Windows functions pretty much do this for you, if I recall. I'm very surprised the Logos dev team knew how to do it right in L3 and then forgot in L4, unless it has something to do with using the WPF platform now?

I also avoid keeping the "Information," "PowerLookup," and "Cited By" tools open as those slow things down. I've also customized my Passage Guide and Exegetical Guide to ony include the sections I care about (I don't need Media Resources, Handout, and all the web content). I believe Mark Barnes covers how to customize guides in his "Preparing a Sermon with Logos" video tutorial series, which are really helpful videos anyway even if you're not going to be preparing a sermon. He gets you familiar with so many aspects of Logos.

Ok. I've finally decided that it is because I live in China, and I have to wait in lines everywhere I go. This effects my perception of the time it takes to load in searches. [:D]

Actually, I am thankful that I have Logos at all. My wife insists that a lot of Chinese Christians would be jealous to know that I have such a tool. We should not complain too much about minor performance issues I guess. There are people that cannot even conceive of such a powerful program to do research.

Anyway, waiting for the search to load gives me time to travel to the lounge to pick up an espresso! [;)]

Hey, mybe Logos should start a Foundation to help Chinese Christians (and others in impoverished parts of the world) be able to afford at least an introductory base package of Logos. Logos could give a portion of its after tax profit to start the foundation, and users could make tax deductable donations to it. I'm serious. If they haven't thought of this already, I think they should.

Yes it would be nice if they could do that. As it is, base packages cost more than the ordinary Chinese professional makes in a month, to say nothing of the ordinary Chinese pastor. If your salary is less than $50 a month, and $49 of that goes for food and clothing, there will be no way to purchase something like Logos.
