Exporting Greek to MS Word

Hi,

I have created a note file with some Greek words, which I wish to export to MS Word. I export to clipboard. If I paste into Word using 'keep source formatting' or 'merge formatting' the text is in a table which takes a long time to edit, if I use 'text only' I lose the Greek font and must manually change all the Greek words to my default Greek font, SBL Greek.

If I simple copy and paste I can only copy one note at a time.

Is there a better way to do this?

You have three options. First, nowadays it's much better to use a single font that is capable of outputting both Greek and Roman characters. There are plenty of high quality fonts that do this, including Gentium.

A second option is to use a clever find/replace function to format all the Greek characters with your preferred font.

But probably the best solution for you is to get rid of the table in Word, without losing the contents of the table:

Select the entire table (it's easiest to do this by clicking the icon in the top left corner of the table. You might want to delete the first column (with the note indicator) first.
Go to the Layout tab.
Select Convert To Text.

How can I tell if a font is fully compatible with Greek? I guess I would use Times New Roman (Windows 7) if thought it could handle all the breathing marks etc.

Thanks also for the comments on removing the tables. It works as you say.

The easiest way is to use character map:

Select your font.
Make sure Advanced View is selected.
Under Group By choose Unicode Subrange.
Choose Greek (or Hebrew) from the resulting box.
Only the Greek/Hebrew characters will be displayed. It easy to scan through and see if everything you need is there. You'll need to scroll down to see all the glyphs that are supported.

Times New Roman should be fine. Other options include Cardo, Arial Unicode (which is ugly), Athena Unicode, KadmosU. Looking at the options in Logos' Greek Font setting will alert you to some more possibilities.

There's a pretty full list of fonts that support Greek characters here: http://www.tlg.uci.edu/help/UnicodeTest.php. Most, if not all of these will also support Roman characters. If you scroll down on that page you can look for specific Greek characters and see what the support is for that character. Note that the site lists which fonts don't have a particular character.

This is very helpful. I have not explored the Character Map before. It looks as if Times New Roman will do everything I need.
