Purchasing Single Volumes for a Future Dynamic Discount

I am eventually interested in getting the Lexham Press Pastor’s Bundle (50 vols.)

As I was going through some of the more discounted resources for this month, the following title caught my eye: I Dare You Not to Bore Me with the Bible

I orginally decided that purchasing it wasn't worth it as I would pick it up later with the Pastor's Bundle I plan on getting. However, after reading a few threads regarding dynamic pricing, I thought that perhaps I would save more money by picking it up now and getting the dynamic price reduced by more than its current cost.

My question is this: Is there an easy way to tell how much money a single title might reduce a bundle dynamically, or do I have to guesstimate? In this case which makes more sense economically?

Purely based on my experience, you do not get dollar for dollar discount when purchasing a volume that is later purchased in a bundle. I have no idea how the actual pricing discounts work.

It works on a percentage basis - I checked it several times with Excel.

The dynamic pricing discount is the percentage of the sum of list prices of those resources you own from the total of list prices of all resources in the bundle. Thus the percentage bundle discount you receive stays the same regardless how much of the bundle you already own.

An easy guestimate is to compare the 'discount' on the print price. If the individual volume has a greater discount than the set, it would probably be worth it. If not, it probably won't. Take John Piper's Contending for Our All. It's currently on sale at 42% off, which equates to 48% off print price. It's part of the John Piper Collection, which is not on sale. But as it's a bundle, it's apparently 38% cheaper than buying the print volumes. So, in theory, buying Contending for Our All separately would save me money over all. It's pretty rare that that happens though. (To repeat, this method isn't foolproof. It's only a guesstimate.)

In theory that means you'll save with your example, because no discount appears to be given in the larger bundle. But that seems strange, so perhaps there's some other reason why no discount amount is shown.

To give a concrete example of Mick's answer, let's imagine a collection of three titles:

Thin little paperback - $10
Decent hardback - $35
Meaty tome - $50

If you were to buy these separately, they'd cost $95 — but Logos sells them as a collection for $75.

If you already own one of the resource, Logos works out what percentage you've paid of the individual volume price. So if you have the decent hardback, Logos knows you own 36.84% of the book value ($35/$95), and therefore gives you a discount of 36.84% of the collection, a discount of $27.63.

So you've paid $35, but only get a discount of $27.63, which perhaps doesn't seem fair — but then you've been enjoying that individual volume, so you can't complain! You can't expect a dollar-for-dollar discount. Imagine I had bought the hardback and the meaty tome for $85. If I had a dollar-for-dollar discount, Logos would have to pay me $10 if I bought the collection!

To be fair to Logos, if you had picked up the decent hardback when it was on sale, and only paid $25 for it, Logos still considers that you own 36.84% of the book value, and you still get the discount of $27.63, making you even better off.

More often than not the first example is the one we end up with RE dynamic pricing. Its kind of Logos though to offer us sales where we are given a better discount on the title than we'd get in the bundle thus saving us more money.
