Logos 5 on Intel Celeron 1007U 1.5ghz w/4GB Ram

Hello,

Could anyone please tell me how Logos 5 would run on a laptop with these specs?

-Intel Celeron 1007U @ 1.5Ghz, 4GB Ram, 320GB HD

The chip was made in early 2013, and it's based on Ivy Bridge, so it's fairly new, however it doesn't have hyperthreading or turboboost, and it's not an i3 or i5.

You are looking at a budget laptop and reviews I've seen of laptops/Ultrabooks with this processor are not impressive, but you get what you pay for!

The Celeron is a cut-down Core i3 with only 2 cores / 2 threads, so it will be slow when indexing your resources. It might be OK if you have less than 1000 resources, but the next version of Logos (5.3) will be 64-bit so the specs are really not adequate.

If you can afford it go for a laptop with a Core i3 processor, 6 to 8 GB RAM and a larger drive (the extra RAM is for 64-bit Logos to run well).

Sometime ago I build a PC for a friend, with an Intel Celeron G1820, and Logos did run great. I guess an SSD (which that PC had) makes much more difference than the speed of the processor.

Geekbench => http://browser.primatelabs.com/processor-benchmarks shows Celeron 1007U benchmark of 1176 that is noticeably faster than Intel Atom CPUs (Netbook) while being noticeably slower than Intel i5 and i7 CPUs.

I guess an SSD (which that PC had) makes much more difference than the speed of the processor.

Concur SSD noticeably improves Logos responsiveness.

What you will discover is that there is a sweet spot for price/performance. The basic rule of thumb (there are always exceptions) is this: any chip over $200 is not worth it and any chip below $100 is starting to get a little long on the tooth. In other words, spending a little more gets you a chip that will be viable for into the future, spending a lot more will not make that much difference in real world usage, your money is better spent on a SDD or more memory.

With the cheaper laptops you also have to look at durability. I purchased a top of the line HP 5 years ago and it is still running great, I purchased two cheap laptops for my daughters for college and both of their laptops had to be replaced within 2 years! In both cases it was not the CPU that was the problem, but the general workmanship and inferior parts such as (keyboards, cooling fan, hinges, cases). There is a lot more to a good laptop than the CPU. It is pretty hard to purchase a bad CPU now days, but very easy to purchase a bad laptop.
