I'm using Word 2003, and I accidentally saved a file under the wrong name. Is there any way I can get the original file back, or is it gone for good. Give it to me straight, Doc.
I have done this before too. If I understand you correctly I believe you can recover it by going to File - Info - Manage Versions. From there you can restore previous versions of a document.
Hope that helps.
You can resave it under the proper name then delete the erroneous one. Are you sure that isn't ".docx" rather than ".doc"? [;)]
To answer your question, we need to know what you actually did: overwrite a file with a new name, or rename a file (without overwriting another file).
If you have two files named "FileA" and "FileB," and you accidentally rename "FileB" as "FileA," "FileA" has been overwritten, but the old "FileB" still exists. (Did you follow?) It may be possible to restore "FileA" to it's previous state by managing versions as was suggested (I'm not really sure). A better method is to retrieve your backup of "FileA" (you do backup your files regularly, right?). I did this just last week with a file in another program.
If you have a "FileB" that you accidentally rename "FileC" (which did not exist until you created it), "FileB" still exists (in it's last saved state), and "FileC" exists. Simply copy/update "FileB" with the info in "FileC," save it as "FileB" and you can safely get rid of the old "FileC" (or save it, if you like).
For some files, you can prevent accidentally overwriting them by either creating them as templates in Word, or by setting their attributes to "Read Only" (via Windows Exporer, right-click menu).
