please Help me speed up logos

I have had Logos for several years and never really used it. When it was time to upgrade to 5 I did it and paid for it hoping that 5 would be different but it is exactly the same. I am a Bi-vo pastor with very limited time at my disposal. If I open logos and all updates and indexing is up to date it takes me 3-4 minutes of very precious time to get the home page up. If there are updates (and there usually are....) it can be a grueling hour or more. Am I the only one that is having this problem or is there something I can do to make it so that i can love logos like so many of you seem to. I know that my computer specs are not the optimum that is listed for logos but I am well beyond the minimum standards necessary and not in a position to purchase the latest and greatest laptop. When this laptop was new i had the same problems with logos so it is hard for me to believe that an upgrade is going to solve my issues.If I know that this speed problem is not the norm I am willing to delete and reload my logos program but I don't want to do that if it isn't going to fix my problems. I think logos is probably an amazing resource I just wish I could use it. Can anybody help? Below are the specs on my laptop.

Two changes to your existing computer would make a huge difference. I would suggest that you consider getting a SSD and adding a bit more RAM. As I said in the discussion mentioned above the SSD make a amazing difference for me.

In the meantime you can choose when you want to update in your personal settings.

Logos Running Slowly

Loading to a Blank Layout may be a good first step. This will bypass the loading of the home page so you can immediately open a resource from your library and start working with it.

To load a Blank Layout on your computer:

1. press and hold the "ctrl" key when you first see the Logos start screen.

2. check the "Use Blank Layout" box.

3. press the "enter" key.

I did and quick look for your computer specs.

C|NET web site shows that your max RAM option for that system is 4GB of DDR2 SO DIMM

adding 1 GB ram may not help much, the best thing is to add a SSD I would say. But if I were you I would look at a new computer.

The first thing you should do is go to Program Settings and set automatic updates to no. Then do the updates when you've finished working, or when you go for lunch or something, instead of when you want to use Logos. Or set it to do them at a specific time, if you prefer that.

Secondly, 3-4 minutes for the Home Page is very slow. What kind of internet connection do you have? How many pages to you typically get? Other than getting a faster broadband, you have two options to speed it up. You can click on the little gear wheel at the bottom left and uncheck the options you don't want or have the least need for. Or you can bypass the Home Page altogether by going to Program Settings and set it to open to a blank layout, or your last layout, or whatever you prefer.

Your setup is anemic for Logos. There are scores of good deals on PCs right now for the back-to-school crowd and word that MS is going to version 9. If you can do it, consider that.

I would generally agree with Bruce on getting an SSD to beef up your pc. However it is still sporting a first generation SATA interface (Serial ata-150). Which means while you will experience performance gains over your standard mechanical drive, they will not be as substantial as what you read from others on the forum.

Lee has the right idea. New budget offerings will outperform your current laptop quite a bit. You may even be able to find a bargain model with an APU instead of a CPU. Performance will still be dramatically better (especially if you have a solid state drive in your new pc) and APUs' are currently AMD's bargain budget offering. If you wait you may be able to buy a windows 8 computer with a complimentary (or inexpensive) upgrade to 9. Usually those purchased just before a new release are offered the opportunity to upgrade to the new OS.

Yes!! Would have been ideal for my wife - ticks all the boxes but sadly not in sale in the UK - at least can't see it (not even on the Asus UK site).

This doesn't tick any boxes for its ability to improve performance as stated previously

first generation SATA (?) severely limits improvements an SSD could provide
DDR2 RAM vs faster DDR3
limited to 4 GB max
buget processor with 2 cores / 2 threads will be slow for indexing resources

The final kicker is 64-bit Windows because the next version of Logos will be 64-bit (only 32 bit Windows will get a 32-bit version) and the minimum RAM should be 6 GB i.e. it will perform (slightly) worse than your current Logos 5.2x on 3/4 GB RAM.

So you should get a new computer to avoid more disappointment.
