In the "Read" screen, network information is not visible

Running the 4.4.1 beta release on my Android phone (Moto G running Android 4.4.4)

As the screenshot below shows, when in "Read" mode, network information is not displayed

As per the screenshot in my post at http://community.logos.com/forums/t/88486.aspx this information is displayed on the home screen.

I believe this is how it worked in the earlier stable version as well.

Is this by design?

Yes, this is by design. Notice that the three buttons at the bottom of the screen are dimmed as well. This is called "lowlight" mode and is typically used to decrease distraction by the top and bottom bars. I'm kind of surprised that the "TESCO" doesn't go away as well.

It's the mobile network name - don't know if that is relevant at all
