Offline books: File size and location?

I've got about 8 GB left on a 32 GB iPod. I would like to download a few of the books I have available for offline reading, but don't want to get too greedy.

Are the resource files identical to the PC based ones? Or at least similar in size?

I'd also like to know if they are considered to be stored in the "Apps" section when the iPod is viewed in iTunes (or is it "Other"?) so that it will be easy to tell if they are being deleted once "Offline Mode" is deselected for those books.
